View Full Version : Network error/problem Please help me
Everytime I try to copy something from the local network that I am on I get this error message:
http://www.rhs.dk/sc011180/error.jpg
It is a permanent network I am on, its not a LAN party or anything and I have been having this problem for some time. The network is pretty much open, we don't have a server or anything, we just use auto IP/DNS in the tcp/ip protocol settings.
I really hope someone can help me with this or if someone have an idea of what the problem is.
If you need anymore information please let me know.

The error is basically telling you that the network path you're trying to use doesn't exist - your computer either can't see the computer or the drive on it that you're trying to access.
Can you access other files from the same computer? Can you see the computer at all in "My Network Places"?
We'll need a lot more detailed information about your network to help you troubleshoot this.
well... I can look around and open txt files and stuff, but when I try to copy or open any files I get that msg, so yes I can see the computer in "My network places"
This is a problem I have with all the other computers on the network too. I have talked with some of the people on the network and they don't have the problems I have thats why I believe its something with my computer.

You said you an open text files. So you can ONLY open a text file on a certain remote computer, but not other types of files?
Are you copying using a network path (via My Network Places) or using a Mapped Network drive in My Computer?
Let me see if I understand. You can SEE a file in Explorer or My Network Places, but when you try to copy it to your drive you get this error?
Is this consistent (all files on the same computer give you this error) or some files you can copy and some you can't?
Are you logging on as an administrator?
Are you using a log and pass?
What OS?
Try logging in as admin with the same pass as the target machine. and see if it changes. this could be a permission thing.
try installing a ipx/spx/netbios protocol on each computer
Run a ping to the opposite host with the -t option and let it run for a 100 pings or so, and see what your average ms responce is. You might have a bad switch port, cable, NIC or something.

Did you make your own cables or buy them? Even when you know what you're doing and have the proper tools it's easy to make a bad cable. Often the crimp makes poor or intermittent contact.
Try swapping your cable if possible with a known good one.
As Iceburg mentioned it could be a bad port on the switch. Try moving your system to another port.
hi all i have the same problem but only between 2 of the tree pcs.The 1 and 3 can transfer files and everything,The 1-2 and 2-3 says "network name no longer available".This error was appeared first with the 1-2 computer when i had them connected each other with a crossover cable.I bought a switch and connected 3 pcs with straight cables but the PC #2 still has this problem.I have checked all the cables many times in all the machines.I really can't understand why this happes.I can see the computer in network place i can even browse its shared drive.I tryied to copy a small txt file but when i am trying with bigger appears that error.I am desperated and thinking of formatting and installing a clear copy. Both computers (1-2) have windows XP SP1 and all the lastes updates and all the network componets of windows expect computer #3.help me please
Man... how stoked am I! A problem of one of my 3 PCs not networking has stumped me for months.
Then I read Cashy's simple reply above about installing ipx/spx/netbios protocols, and sure as hell, it all WORKS!
Thankyou loads Cashy, owe you one. And thanks for such a friendly community, have learnt a lot just browsing through.
