Networked one way only

Hi all

I have a small networking problem that I hope somebody can throw some light on.

I have 2 pc's connected by a crossover cable. Everything is working fine when running under Win98 but have partially stopped since I put XP on one of the pc's.

I have a P1-233 still running win98 and able to access the files on both puters. Not able to access printer, though.

I also have a P2-333 now running XP which is unable to access any of the files on the P1 now.

ICS has also stopped working since I upgraded to XP.

I have worked out ways round these minor issues but would prefer to sort them out correctly.

Sounds like you're running The win98 box as the ICS pc..

Also, make sure you have a user set-up on the XP box for the user you're logged into on the 98 box. XP & 2K are both much more of a security headache than 98 alone.

Also too, make sure NetBeui (NetBios) is installed on both, you might need the XP cd to install it on the XP box. NetBeui is the friendliest and fastest protocol on a non-routed network. Of course, TCP/IP will have to be there too for the ICS to work.

Printer issue - find the name of your XP box; Rt-Click 'My Computer' Click 'Properties'; Click 'Computer Name' tab and look for 'Full computer name' and write it down. Then go to your 98 box and Click Start->Run, when the box appears type 2 backslashes ( \ ) and the name you wrote down above (\\XPboxName) and click 'ok' or hit enter. 1 of 2 things will happen 1-a window opens that shows any shared resources on the XP box (printers or folders), just Rt-click on the printer, click install/connect, point to the driver, and you're good to go. 2-an error appears saying 'network path not found', if you get this it's a protocol/sharing problem and let us know.
