Eeuhm...where to begin...
Well here eeuhm overclocking is making the hardware in your computer running faster then the stock speed...
you can do this in your bios. This means that you can change (with a decent amount of cooling) the speed of an e.g. amd 1800 to e.g. an amd 2000 or even a 3000 or more... you can also make your video card faster (faster not bigger)...
Almost everything can be overclocked... some things like network cards don't like being overclocked... processors are very easy and suitable...

The very tip of the iceburg but still simple enough of an explanation. Keep in mind that overclocking generates large amounts of heat so extra cooling is likely needed. Some folks use extra fans to air cool, but if that isn't enough you have to water cool. If you are considering overclocking you need to read, read, read, and read more. There are advantages and disadvantages to overclocking. Read and be your own judge.

generally is done for fun and higher benchmarks nowdays..but back in the day of sub-1Ghz processors it was something quite beneficial in real day to day usage.

one of my mates has a 286 processor, and he manages to run XP on it! just purely because its overclocked to twice its speed.

286 ???

I thought they went out with the dinosaurs :D

Even at double speed, I bet XP takes 2 days to load

Those were the days when 640K of RAM is all you would ever need in the future. When everything was configured manually, and Microsoft didn't have a windows 95. I miss those days.

I have seen someone put a socket 5 pentium in a 386, with a special adapter. I have also seen someone run win95 on a commodore amiga. Beets the heck out of any other machine from its time.
