Connecting PC and Laptop

I want to connect my Dell PC (running ME) to my new Toshiba laptop (running XP) to tranfer files between them. I have a thrid party software program, but can't figure out how to connect the machines. I have an USB Hub connected to the PC. When I connected the laptop to the Hub, the machines didn't recognize that the other was there. Any suggestions?

According to this FAQ you need a special adapter/cable to connect two machines using USB;

I would recommend looking for a FAQ or Troubleshooting for whatever 3rd party program you are using to connect the two machines
