Hi all...

Just built a pc for a friend out of parts I gathered together. We put in a Realtek 8139 NIC that is supposed to be 10/100. He connects ok, but only gets 10mbps (DSL). I'm wondering why we can't get it to connect at 100mbps. I tried going into the networking properties and forcing it to use 100mbps, but that closes the connection. We can only use "auto" for the speed setting.

I tried updating the drivers of the card and that's a no-go as well. He seems to have a pretty fast connection, but I'm a perfectionist. Any ideas?

Thanks again...

What exactly are you connecting this to? A hub? A switch? A router? A DSL/Cable modem?

Hes conecting i would think to a 10mbit DSL modem.
I'd figure OS is XP too.
Ok reason you can only get 10mbits is because the modem itself is only designed to handel 10mbit.
Now you will never actuly achieve this speed on a DSL line without paying threw the nose :D
You can achieve the full 100mbit when your hooked into a router, and in that case you'll only get that speed on a LAN. PC to PC not PC to net.
Hope that helped

The last poster is correct, you will only see that speed if you are connected to a router, hub or anything other than your DSL modem

If you want to prove it to yourself. Take a cross over cable and connect to another machine, you should be 100Mbps show up in the systray
