This prosses seems a bit difficult and risky. Does any care to leave a little input?
Is it a nessesary thing to do?
Does it really improve perfomance?
All in all is it worth while?

I've never ran into a problem updateing a MOBOs BIOS. However I don't do it just beacuse a new version is available but will do it if I intend on making a hardware changes or upgrade (example is some BIOSs needed to be upgrade to reconize larger hard drives. They can improve performance, especially if the update affects networking capabities.

Ditto... some motherboard manufacturers provide nice utilities to do it. Makes it a little less risky.

Updating firmware isn't something I do often, but I have done:

1. BIOS update on my A8N-SLI mobo, so I could use current chipset drivers
2. Harddrive firmware when a server's RAID array kept degrading
3. DVD-ROM firmware when the unit started failing to read discs

Never had an issue doing it, and it corrected the problems I was experiencing.

Thank you for the replies. I am not experiencing any problems, that I know of anyway.
I saw the article this am and was wondering if this is something that should be done since my comp is about 3 years old. I have never attempted anything like this before and am a bit skeptical about trying it. Also I have not added any hardware or anything to the computer.

Thanks,

Dan

Read the changelog to see if anything applies to you. Like what the others said, I won't do it unless there's a defined need like when I plopped in an X2 to replace my single core.

Absolutly agree, while I never had issues with BIOS updates they are not to be attempted lightly, luckily in some cases motherboards from some makers come with dual bios chips so if one gets corrupted you can boot still and recover.

I'm convinced, I don't see any reason to attempt this unless a problem arises that it is needed.

Thanks for the replies,

I haven't attempted to investigate or update my laptop's BIOS, but have succesfully updated the firmware on my Netgear modem / router twice. :cool

Don't know if I would be game enough to have a go at my BIOS, though. :-D

Bios updates usually have specific fixes, if you have no problems, Dont!

I would never, never, do Live update/flash, I would only update/flash via floppy or CD/DVD
