View Full Version : Router not assigning IP address

My siblings and I have come down to my parents for Christmas. They have a PC with DSL through SBC. We attached a router several years ago so that when us kids come home we can connect our laptops. Never had a problem prior to now.

My laptop sees the network and is online.

My sister's laptop sees the network, tries to connect and gets an error that says "Limited or no connectivity"
I ran ipconfig and it shows the following:

Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : (blank)
Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.126.121
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . . : 169.254.126.121

I ran an ipconfig\flushdns. I then tried to do an ipconfig/renew but it times out.

I even went in and gave it a static address to use and put in gateway.2wire.att as the DNS suffix. When I did that it shows it has an excellent connection but still no internet.

She connects wirelessly at her own house and has had no problems. It worked a couple days ago at her house, but it will not connect at our parents. Again, my laptop did connect and is working, but this other laptop is not.

Any ideas?

Hi Ags2000 and welcome to MGs.

The 169.254.x.x IP address indicated the laptop was not communicating with the router at all.
I'd go back into the router configuration pages and double check that the laptop has the same parameters as the router.
Mode - B only, B/G, G only
Channel - Could be different from default
Type of security - WEP, WPA, WPA2 if it was set up
Security key - needs to match exactly
Firewall settings on laptop - check to make sure it is not blocking access.

Might try wiring the laptop first and then wireless.

This site (http://www.ezlan.net/wireless.html) has some good troubleshooting procedures.
Hope this helps.
