Ps3(blu-ray) HDTV question/problem HELP!

Greetings Fellow Geeks!

I am an employee at good old blockbuster inc. and a customer of mine is having some issues with his ps3 playing blu rays on his TV. I have a ps3 myself but i never seemed to have any problems with it, He is an older gentleman and not sure if he could of figured out how to research online. Unfortuneatly for myself, i to, have little free time, but i told the guy that i would try and figure it out, or see what i could find, so i once again need the help of you all!

Here is the information i have gathered from him:

80GB ps3(updated to most current version) hooked up directly to the tv via HDMI.

The tv is a "Toshiba 36" 1080i tube/rear projection".

Customer does not the know the model when i talked to him and he claims its only about 4 or 5 years old(around 2005 he got it) he says he gets in HD cable just fine and it looks good, but when ever he tries to play a blu-ray(not sure on games) on his ps3 the screen will flash and it wont show up. Im not sure what the problem might be, i thought of the basics like oh could be bad hdmi, but customer says he uses the same HDMI cable for his cable box he just switches them out. He has tried to reset the factory settigns on the ps3 numerous times with no luck, and goes to the video options and changes it to automatic.

I was hoping maybe you guys could get to the bottom of this problem, im either thinking the tv is to old to use the ps3 (or something i dunno) or what.

Any Info would be wonderful.

I don't know about ps3's (don't own one). Does his ps3 play blue-ray? Can he play the ps3 off another tv (even if it not hi-def)?
Can you use your ps3 on his tv?

all ps3s play blu ray, i think he mentioned his ps3 does work on other tvs and i dont know him well enough to go to his house and use my ps3 on his tv lol.

The actual model may be the answer. According to most manufacturers of rear projection tv's that are that old, is that they are HD "Ready" (key word). I know you said your customer is receiving an HD Cable signal. That being said, is he using an HD receiver to get that signal?

Other than that, he may want to take the PS3 back to where he bought it and have him test it. It may be defective.

yea he uses a time warner hd reciever for the cable.

he said he tried calling sony, they said it was the tv, so he called toshiba and they said it was the ps3.

so i dunno, maybe it is the tv.

ill see if maybe i can get a part number from him.

Last thing I can think of, ask him if he's using HDMI out or the AV Multi output? Ask him to try the component video cables if the HDMI is not working. If this solves the problem, then you know its an HDMI problem (however, it can still be either the PS3 or the TV).

does the customer see anything at all when he plugs in his PS3? Like the menu screen and what not, but can't see anything when the movie starts up?

If he does then he has the default output set too high, even if it is set too automatic, and he should set it lower. Like 720P if the set he has is a 1080I.

I was just going to say that. While you're at it, verify the hardware itself is fine by checking if the PS3 plays regular DVDs without problems.
