The Australian Federal Government has finally announced its approval to build a $43b High Speed Optical 'Fibre-to the-node' (FTTN) Network to reach 90% of the country.
Work is to begin next year (2010) with final completion due in 2018......Hurry the heck up! :zzz
By Gov't standards here, this means we should be experiencing 400+ Mbps by around 2025.......eeek!
Wonder if i will be able to afford a connection on the Old Age Pension. :-D
Now i know that to some of you guys in certain parts of the U.S and Europe, these sorts of speeds have been around a while, but for Aussie Geeks, this is music too our ears! (DSL2 at 20Mbps is currently the fastest available and that depends on where you live)
And our major Telco....'Telstra', who has had a monopoly on ISP services in this country since day dot (they own the copper in the ground), have been excluded from the bidding to install it!
Sadly, Im betting they will surely wangle their way into the deal somehow.
Wish us luck :cool
