i hope thats not the future... its cool, but for everyday computer use i think it would get kind of annoying. not to mention the huge task of training users on this kind of thing. i would totally mess around with it though.

I don't like it nor do I think it's MS related.

3D is a bit different but agree with you its likely to get annoying after a while, but I can see similar GFX layouts being used not with the mouse, but with touch screens, although having used iPhone and its touch, they will have to come up with a self cleaning screen or one that doesnt get sticky finger marks all over it within 30secs.

Never mentioned it was from Microsoft, just a project I came across from a 3rd party, but its not uncommon for MSFT to use ideas like this in future projects. Wouldnt have expected a convicted Linux user to like it, but IIRC their are some 3D GUIs avalable for Linux or in-progress projects "looking glass" is one I remember..

However MSFT do have a project that at present is not in a 3D type graphic layout as the above but is how the next generation GUI does work on a standalone machine and Windows 7 will have option if you have the hardware, to interact by touch and mutlitouch in Surface (http://www.microsoft.com/surface/) and for Windows 7 its TouchUI (http://blogs.msdn.com/e7/archive/2009/03/25/touching-windows-7.aspx)

Surface I have used, but sadly dont have a Touchscreen LCD yet to try Windows 7 TouchUI

That's pretty cool.
I don't need it, but still cool.:)

Its cool how it relates to the real world and all but the actual application isn't all that practical when you think about it.

I can see my desktop getting messier then my real desk usually is.

I dunno it just doesn't seem all that practical to me
