Teh rest of your system looks good, though.

I get 1K :D Can you upgrade your vcard? If your really cheap you could get a Radeon 9100 like me for $60 online or so I think. Or you could go for a 9600 np for... some amount, or even a 9600 Pro for.. $190, or go for the brand new Radeon 9800 XT for $400, $500? Then you can show ChrisC who's boss ;) Sorry, I'm not to up to date on the pricing.

i just can see spending $400 on a video card.

Ok, I got prices, all from newegg (http://www.newegg.com), all sapphire (like ATI but cheaper):
Radeon 9100 128MB-$72
Radeon 9600 non-pro-$122
Radeon 9600 Pro-$150

I guess you wouldent be interested in anything faster as it would cost more. You could also wait for the Radeon 9600 XT which will go for $199 retail, and probably around 150-190 if you buy online. This will be a lot faster then the current Radeon 9600 Pro.

besides gaming, do they have any purpose

ChrisC

nope, video cards are only for gaming. You need one, but, it can be $30 and still put out a quality image. Just, cant play games for a crap.

And if you got the 9800XT, id consider it a challenge :D

Athlon XP @2.47 ghz (214mhz FSB)
512mb Corsair XMS PC3200C2 ram (fast timings)
Asus A7N8X deluxe mobe (2 sata 120gb in raid0)
and a GeforceFX5900 (480mhz core, 1ghz memory)

edit: oh, and the XT line only adds a fairly small clock increase. Just in line with product launches. In a few months, their next generation chip will be coming out.

The R400 (or whatever the core will be called) won't be out till january at the earliest. Oh, and your P4 2.4GHz 800FSB overclocks like a champ... If your into overclocking.

Ya, my Roomates P4 800mhz overclocks to 3.4ghz on air cooling. With liquid, he's had 3.6, but, he thinks he can get 3.7.

His is a pretty lucky example, though.

Well they do, but vcards are so advanced now it doesn't matter, you can pick up a $30 vcard and it will run windows just fine, just not games.

The point being I have a work pc that would never run 1/2 the games around yet runs rock solid and has never had a terminal failure.. i say this as all my files/docs/etc are backed up every night to the server and I can temp fate as much as I want.

The only reason you would pay out for a good video card is for the latest games or to have the knowledge that you have a PC that is better than your mates :D

When I see "computer at work" I think of MS Office and maybe ACAD and/or Photoshop. Your garden variety video card is none too fast at dealing with any of these. Large documents in Word do not need 3d cards, but a fast 2d is a must. For ACAD or Photoshop a second monitor is either manditory or nice depending on your level of expertise. There is a place for video cards besides games.

It's just that if you were running 3DMARK then you must be somewhat concerned about gaming performance.
