I have just installed DSL at my home. This is ADSL I believe, single line, noise filters for phones, modem and phones can be used at same time. Modem is a Paradyne 6310-A4-200, Router is Linksys BEF SR41. Both PC's are winXP. They are in opposite ends of house.
I have the Modem/Router setup working on one PC.
After running cable through the walls, around the garage and through the floor I added the RJ45 cat5 ends, approx 100'. When I tried to hook up the PC I got a consistent flashing of the lights for that port about a 1 second interval. When the connection is working I get a steady show of lights. I assumed that I screwed up the ends as I could not check them with my RJ45 patch check meter.
I pulled the patch cable back through the house enough to get the ends together and they showed the correct continuity according to the meter. ie, 1-1, 2-2 etc. I then checked the cable that was working and it showed the same continuity. I wanted to ensure it wasn't a crossover cable. I then tried the 100' cable in the PC that was working and got the same light flashing problem and the PC showing a LAN connection unplugged status.
I then assumed that perhaps my wire had a bad section so I built another 100' cable with the same results.
I know that I have built longer cables at work out of the same wire and connections. I have never had a problem with cables this long.
Any ideas? Does a home Linksys router deliver a weaker signal than my work Cisco routers that it can't carry a signal approx 100'? I am think wireless but would prefer not to purchase another router as I already have this one. Thanks in advance. AlasKen
