Shoot Robert I got so damn frustrated I was trying to talk myself into just sticking with windows, at least I know some of it.
One link I got pertaining to the networking was like reading Chinese. So I said the heck with this link and got my Linux book out, it was a little better in that it was Japanese. My bio rythms must be off
:rolleyes: ;) So as I said I just let Mandrake configure it for me. Same end result except that it only took 5 minutes instead of 5 days. I learned alot though, I'll get closer to it the next time, assumming I don't forget everything I already learned. It's tough getting old.:D

The second computer that I converted to Linux is flying through the 500 frame tinker that it got. I'm at near 400 and it's only been a day. Uploaded a tinker and gromac today and got back 2 fast gromacs. All is well in crunching land. Been a week since I deleted one while messing with the computers. :) :) :)
I have two FAST tinkers now, too.
One of my uploads were balked at, though. :rolleyes:
Understandable Glen. Glad to see your posting and doing as well as can be expected. I'll try not to waste any more WU's until you get back to folding to make up for what you don't get done :)

My Linux machines are tearing up a couple of 500 frame tinkers. They are going faster then the gromacs on the two windows machines.

I just joined and I already have a question lol. If i exit out and just keep the folding@home display in the taskbar (not actually open), will it still run? I'm totally new, I just thought I would help out a little bit after reading the other posts. It sounded cool so I"m still learning. any tips or tricks would be great :)

Until then, try this:
hover the cursor over the icon and see if it says that it is running,
and,
open up the Task Manager, and see if it is running...

Hey Robster, I did a scan on the Linux computer and I've got some holes. I went to the firewall to see what it was set at or if it was even set and guess what, yes that's right I have no idea what I'm looking at. :rolleyes:
Here's my options:
everything (no firewall)

domain server
SSH server
FTP server
mail server
pop and imap server
Now which of those do I want to check or am I going about this the wrong way

Darn!!!! We're getting the remnants of Francis here and some time during the night the power must have gone out. The two linux computers were still on the sign in screen so no crunching got done. I'm getting ready to leave so since a tinker will be done in about a half hour I decide to sign on the internet so it can send when done. Guess what the modem or something doesn't work anymore. I don't have time to mess with it any more right now. I queried the modem and all is fine but it won't dial out. It won't dial period. Give me some ideas for when I get home.
I checked the line, it's fine. My little window comes up and says
"Modem ready"
then
"Initializing modem" then it just sits there at that point apparently forever with out dialing.

I set up my Mom's rig today so that the console runs as a service. Used FireDaemon, just like the Gold Fish said to.
Should be returning soon, she has a 1.7 Ghz Pentium, XPHome.
Downloaded Electon Microscope 3 as well, but am afraid to start it... Don't know if it will start the thing redundantly or not.

you read my mind :P I was thinking about an "easy installer" like I've done before... but that was with a floppy and a program i wrote myself, on Windows98. And it didnt do anything useful. Unless you count randomly ejecting all the CD trays in the classroom at once as useful. Heee hee, that was so funny :p
Ahh, yeah. What would rawk is if someone here owned a PC shop... and used FAH to stress-test their machines :D let em do work till the customer comes to pick them up again. For making custom machines, make a "burn in" period of a week running FAH :D

Remember the problem I had with the modem. It would sign on to the internet but not go any where. I've got the cable modem at the same point. Send me your DNS server numbers again and let me see if that works like it did for the modem.

Update on the fiasco.
Called this AM to have them set up my modem. Explained to the guy that I was running a modem on windows and I got the new one to run on Linux.NO PROBLEM
the guy says. I've got to go to work so I leave get home and my windows modem doesn't work. I format Linux reload it set up the cable modem and it doesn't work. I call the cable company, I don't have a madem set up. Turns out you can only have one modem per line because you only get one IP address so when I asked the guy to set up the second modem and he did he got off and realized you couldn't do two modems so he didn't set up any. So now I'm back up with windows hi-speed and linux dial-up. The modem works now that I reloaded Mandrake. A whole lot of work and aggravation over the last two days and all for nought.
I tried that but didn't know how to configure the protocol or something like that. I guess I'll have to try it again, LATER.
I'm sure that nobody noticed but I just passed the 300 work unit mark and 25,000 on score. Fyi for you newcomers, I've only been folding since the end of June so if you keep those computers running the points will add up.

It seems as though something is wrong somewhere. I've got a gromac that's taking 42 minutes for each %1 work done and that's about the slowest I've seen. So in three hours you should have seen some progress. Open up your FAH log and see what it says maybe electron isn't reading it right or updating itself.
Hopefully somebody that knows something will be along in a minute.

Goldfish can certainly sort this out.
I had to install it on Mom's box, which is WindowsXP. I personally had to give up on the console/firedaemon route because it defeated me. I had to go for the screen saver :rolleyes:
We need to try to get Goldfish to throw together a quick how-to
(or one of us can steal one off the net) for the Windows clients.
I wish I could be of help, i_wanna_corndog, but, I will say, as mgrist said, the log should be a good place to monitor progress until the EMIII is sorted out.

She's not on the 'puter all that much...

Well,this gromacs I'm working on is very stubborn,usually I get around 9-11 mins a frame,this one is 15-17 mins a frame.Oh well,however long it takes,
I'm in this for the right reasons.I just bumped her up to 2.1ghz to help speed it up.Dont worry my system is 100% stable at this speed.
I will have another AMD rig running aTbird 1.3ghz soon.But that will be overclocked as well.Latest,the end of the month.

I could never tweak these computers loaded. Don't see how anyone ever could, though some developers claim to...

I know the protiens that I got in the last day or so are all painfully slow on all my computers. My main workhorse (2800+ Barton) is plugging along at about 5 minutes a frame which is many times slower than normal, and it hit a couple frames overnight that took 45+ minutes each. I had just added two more computers a Athlon 4 1ghz notebook, and a PIII 633mhz and they both received really large WU's as well. I imaging that the Barton will kick back this one in the next hour or so, but its probably been about 30hrs of processing time. The 1ghz and the 633 are going to be some time yet unfortunatly. Also, the faster you churn out WU's the more likely you are to get large size ones in return. The f@h servers give fast computers tougher jobs..

Man this is slow! My 3.2 GHz P4 HT is chugging out one frame in a whopping 43 minutes! This protein is HUGE! I better get lots of points for this WU!
On another note, I had mentioned earlier the problem I had with running the console as a service. I have figgered out one other thing. When I run the console file as a service, it doesn't launch the FahCore, but when I run the console normally, FahCore pops up on the Task Manager... Any ideas?

Yea i noticed something
At first was getting tiny gromacs for my A64 3400 machine, and now all of the ones i get are the biggest slowest gromacs out their ;)
My 2Ghz Laptop is now constantly getting mid range gromacs.
I think they send harder longer stuff to us with the faster PC's which is logical
Now you know why I have so many troubles :D:D

My thoughts exactly. The average user nowadays, who just surfs, makes documents, e-mail, etc... doesn't TOUCH the computering power that they have.
Oh well, it must suck to be them... never trying to find the tweaks for performance, "getting under the hood"... I pity them for their missing out. Its all about not getting exposed to the fullness of the experience, I am convinced.

Actually,Cpu's are designed to be used at 100% load.Extra voltage is really the only thing that will shorten the life span.Heat will not kill it,unless of course you do something drastic like run it without a cooler,but It will run more efficient at lower temperatures like you said.Heat sucks!

Well why I did it I don't know, has to do with the song above I guess. I went and got another mother board for my AMD 3200 and so far so good. Man that thing is fast when the settings are where their suppose to be, it is by far the fastest I have. I'm going to take the MB that was with the 3200 and put my 2400 in it since it runs fine at a 333 FSB then I'll take the 1600 chip and put in my sons computer, he's six so it's plenty fast for him, once I get a power supply that is, and I've got one of them on the way. So once I send my son's computer back to his house I'll still have five computers running, slowest being the 2400 AMD. Now having said that let me say this:

Woke up this AM expecting the AMD to be froze up like it has been for the last year and it was fine, My Linux computer was froze up though, first time for that. I had 512 MB's of DDR 400 in it until last night when I switched it out for 512 of DDR 333. I guess it doesn't like the slower memory, but the 3200 loves the 400.
What's a fellow to do?

1 x Celeron 2.5Ghz baby
Will have another Athlon 1.0Ghz hooked up tomorrow. So 3 machines running. The XP2700 will be 24/7, the Athlon will be business hours, and the Celeron whenever the missus bothers to turn her PC on!!!
Hopefully I can help the Geeks as I have done in the past. (I was in the SoB client when it was running).
Will be checking back in a bit more now I have re-found my Geekness ;)

Looks like we gotta way to go to get up in the top 100. But seems like a few new machines (including my 3) added in last few days, so should not be a problem.

I traded out that stick of DDR333 in the Linux machine with 400 and it's been doing fine. It would run fine until I started folding then within a couple of minutes it would freeze. Amazing what a difference a few little herzes make :D

I'm doing pretty good, although we have quite a few new fast movers. If my pIII would ever finish its first WU I would be doing even better.. But it has some really really big gromac, and its been like 3-4 days already for only 50% of the unit. My barton chews through the WU's really fast though, and even my Athlon 1ghz notebook is doing ok.
Oh and about my secret weapon:

No it's pretty much random. And a 125 doesn't exactly mean it's a bigger unit. You may get a 500,000 that runs faster then a 100. Tinkers are 400 and 500 frames and they are the slowest of the lot.
Speaking of tinkers I have not had one in about two weeks. I'm going to have to do the google thing I guess. There's to many crunchers coming up fast to be messing with all gramacs

Well our progress up the table has definately slowed!!
In 741st place now. Still a long way to go to get the top 100!!!
I have now dropped 4 units onto the server. For a nice total of 324.0 points :D Still got another 2 units done that have not appeared on the server either. Had a massive 10,000 framer yesterday!! But got a rate of 2.7 secs a frame!! He he.

Stats page always seems quite a bit behind though. My 2 boxes at home completed 6 WU's between them, and no idea what the PC at work done, but it was well on its way through its first WU last time I looked on Tuesday morning. Hmmmm.
Whats really strange is the 10000 frame Gromac I got the other day on my XP2700 box running at 2.7 frames/sec gave me the biggest score, yet was the fastest WU I completed so far. :rolleyes: Yet a WU that I had on the Cely 2.5Ghz, a 400 frame Tinker running at 7min 58secs a frame gave me only about 30 measly points. Grrrrr :(
Oh well, onwards and downwards I go.
BTW we up to 720th place Geeks. Top 500 within a week I reckon, Top 100 within a month, if not sooner (if we can get some more recruits)

Same here. I got 3 Gromacs on my 3 machines, and they all running slower than a snail in reverse!
My Athlon 1.0Ghz at work is running a 400 frame Gromac at around 12mins a frame!! Even for that slow beast thats huge. Highest I ever seen on any of my 3 boxes. Even my XP2700 has a 125 framer running at a snails-pace 7mins 58secs a frame!! (Usual for that box is around 2mins a frame tops)
At this rate, not going to have anything to return for a few days :( Gonna lose my place if I aint careful. Hope to God these things are worth the effort. Will be a bad loser if they aint worth some serious points!!!
Should be. The benchmark machines that the points are calculated upon is using a Celeron 700Mhz machine, so you'll get a good bit of points for that WU ;)

Hey Glenn although protiens play a part in cancer Folding also has to do with downs syntrom, cerebal palsy, birth defects in general. When an embreo (I can't spell all these words) is developing and a protien gathers wrong and hence can't fold then bad stuff happens.
I've been to a bunch of sites about protiens and there is all kinds of varibles and of course each site has it's own slant depending on a paticular Doctors views and or education. It is an interesting subject though.

That is cool Glenn. When I saw your post before I meant to reply. From what I gathered the point total they give is the least you can get. If your running a fast computer and finish it faster then they calculated then you get more points, Is that right??
Just as an update of sorts..
As a prediction if we don't lose any folders, we will be in the top 200 by December. unfortunatley, the outlook of getting into the top 100 is a little less favourable. MacCenteral, at 71, have a really really steep production graph... we might be able to edge into the 90's but unless we get some serious computational power...
ok so went from pulling a 1000 frame gromac last night, to when i got home i am almost done with a 100 frame gromac. ha i guess standford didn't like the way that i ran that 1000 frame gromac in 19 hours.
oh i know it all balances out, i just wish i could pull some bigger gromacs. not sure why i want to.
Some news,,Going shopping tomorrow for a replacment tower for our den computer,,,the thing is a antiquated by todays standards,,,,,going to look at the E-machines they have been aquired by Gateway, and offer decent pricing, and I only need to buy the tower, so for about 400+US could get another P4 machine here folding away,,:D Glenn:D Smiles :D BIG LOL

I did some of that also when I really should not have spent the money, but I sure do get a lot of enjoyment out of these computers. Whose main task I might mention is folding. I only need one to do what I do the other four are as I said for folding!
