I just thought I'd make this thread to replace whats going on in the "Official Folding@Home thread" as that is getting ridiculously long, and some info might be useful and some might not (to other readers) and traversing a great big multi-page thread isn't great fun.

Oh yes, I seem to have 2 100 frame Gromacs running on my Athlons at the moment... and I've recruited a new P4 laptop, (Panasoinc toughbook). To make sure that it doesn't drain his battery I've set it up to only crunch when mains power is turned on, so it probably wont be a great producer, but its a little extra boost :)

man this gromac is taking for ever. its 35+ minutes per frame, usually its around 20-25 for me. oh well. i'll be on the boards late tonight i should be able to see it finish around midnight.

left my machine on overnight, hopefully it got some work done.

We are getting to the high 600's now : 644 and our production rate is still significantl'y higher than most of the people around us :)

I lost the gromac I had thar was taking 50 something minutes a frame when I unplugged the computer by accident, I;m now working on a ONE HOUR AND TEN MINUTES A FRAME GROMAC on the 1600 AMD and a 50 something minute a frame one on the Linux computer so quit your crying :D:D:D

My one hour and 10 minute a frame gromac is now at one hour and fourteen minutes a frame  The linux machine is still around fifty minutes a frame on it's gromac but the other four will be sending units today.
The last time I checked my stats was last wednesday and I've done 27 since then for about 2150 points

Well all I end this evening on a sour note,,,in the process of changing out my laptop battery,,,2 charge the secound for tomorrow ,,,,so on AC only at the moment g-d sent a bolt of lightning down on our block ,,needless to say my laptop went dead , no battery backup...
That sucks! Sorry to hear about it. Just to commiserate, I had three different machines all well into their cycles when I lost power due to a flood here in the Pittsburgh area because of the remnants of hurricane Ivan. Lost much folding time due to outage, etc. Tomorrow will be a better day!

too bad...

my folding contribution has gone down from 3 pc's to 1, which is the AthlonXP 2000+ @ 1,8Ghz cause my router has broken down.

no can't do, would have to buy a modem and our phones are via cable too, so we don't have any telephone connection.
everything goes through the coax cable, tv, internet, phones...

gotta get a good router this time :)

It looks like it's payback time. Since I've started folding, I've always been getting all these little, tiny WU's and so I have not had to wait long for updates to my score to happen. Suddenly, I am working on 3 BIG tinkers with long finish times. This is very weird. This change seems to have coincided with my change to the Windows console version from the Windows GUI version. Any thoughts anyone?

rmsubasic
09-21-04, 10:15
Now for the windows graphical client on the advanced tab at the bottom,,you can select STANDARD, No Preferance or deadlineless....deadlineless,,,will pull A BIG UNIT,,standard will hopefully pull a gromac and no preferance what ever is in order next to process,,,,but keep in mind that the Folding we do is for STANFORD , and they can send out for processing what at the time is important to them in clinical studies,

Hope that helps for a overview of how and why the projects change and how to best TRY to get the unit type YOU wish to run, Glenn
Actually, I am OK with whatever they send me, as long as it benefits the project. I chose No Preference, by the way. I admit to some small fascination with watching my score grow too...

How does one generate, or get to see, the cool looking team statistics graphs? Is there any way we could see some of those on a daily or weekly basis? Sure would be nice to see a graphic of our team on its upswing.

rmsubasic
09-23-04, 14:59
Have a look here !!! and bookmark !!! Glenn

http://www.statsman.info/folding2stats/html/12072.html

I lost a week of work,,,POUT
I just checked, and our weekly team point output is 111th place. That's right, there are only 110 teams out there producing points at a faster rate than we are. That means that we're doing great, and climbing fast. But, if we ever REALLY want to make it into the top 100 teams, we'll need to do better. We'll need about a 25% increase in our current weekly production numbers to be climbing at a rate that will be taking us into the top 100. So c'mon, every 4th person needs to add a new machine to the folding frenzy, or recruit another person to help. Just kidding, but let's keep up the good work.

eric06
09-23-04, 16:20

Cool stats page. Gonna keep that bookmarked!

All I seem to be getting at the moment is stupid little 100 frame Tinkers that take a few hours but drop less than 50 points a time (most are dropping 10-20 points). OK, my units count has gone sky high, but my points count is almost not moving :( I wanna go back to getting 10000 frame Gromacs that took a couple of days, but gave out 250 points + each time. THAT was good to see each time one of them dropped on the server.

Have added the Majorgeeks team details to my sig on 2 of my chatrooms I go to, so will see if that adds a few more boxes to our count. As said before, even if every fourth member can recruit just one more box, we should get the production rate high enough to hit the top 100 teams!! So I am hoping to get a couple of new bodies into the crunching for the team.

Question what version of the software are you running ?,and on what OS Folding at Stanford can be adjusted to select the type of unit for you to DL IE: TINKER OR GROMAC , Glenn

PS thats for the continued promotion on the other boards you frequent !!!

LOL. Its not on boards, I go to chatrooms to speak to real live people!!! (Yes, I really am that sad lmao)

I got Windows XP SP2, and F@H version 5.02

And how do you determine the packets you get??? I got 3 Gromacs this time around, each one a paltry 125 framer. Would be nice to ask for the 10000 frame Gromacs again. I liked them on my 2 big boxes. The little 100 frame Tinkers are good for my Athlon 1.0Ghz though, that box seems to do quite well on them. But my 2 big boys (XP2700+ and Celeron 2.5Ghz) like the Gromacs better, especially the BIG gromacs :D

One is my primary work machine (the 2.8), and another is the primary home machine (four of us sharing that one). That's my setup -- for now. May add significant firepower here shortly because nobody else seems to want to run with the big dog.

i now think that it is time for me to spend some cash and get a new computer. ( my celeron is f'ed up big time now and there is a finished 250 frame gromac on it waiting to be sent in )
there is a store by me ( circuit city ) that is selling a compac celeron D processor 325 Desktop 2.53 ghz 256kb l2 Cache, 533mhz FSB
and 256mb DDR-dram memory for 369 dollars.
so with the last of my cash ( almost ) i might go out and get it...
and then wait to build my new one later.
what a decision i have to make

Whew!
Glad that's done!
@mgrist: Or anyone else who has interest in a bash script that will output
the names of the team members & their scores...
I have a script now. Laugh if you want, but, it works! (at least, on my machine). It is part of a bigger project, but, maybe you will like to play with it.

You may want to rename it first with the command

mv lynxer.txt lynxer.sh

then make the script executable with the command:

chmod a+x lynxer.sh

and then execute it from the command line with the command:

./lynxer.sh

You can then read the output of the text file called cleangoods.txt with
the command
more cleangoods.txt

I have attached it as a text file here in this post.

WOW we are moving on up, we are at 436 now. If we can keep this pace or quicken it we should be darn close to the top 100 by x-mas. Now that would be cool!
Robster I've not done anything with the script, am barely touching my Linux computer or the others for that matter. I've got a router sitting on my desk now and will hopefully beable to get it going so I can get Linux on the high speed internet. Once I do I'll be switching back to the Linux computers for play and work. WORK yea right :D

rmsubasic
09-30-04, 14:14
If we continue at our current point output pace, we'll not be in the top 100 by Christmas. On the other hand, if we keep our current rate of acceleration (unlikely) we could make it by Christmas easily. It looks to me like we've gotten some great new contributors recently, and even though I am a junior member (3 weeks) of the team I want to say thanks for all the effort from the new guys as well as the pace setters (mgrist and many others) and all the other contributors. We're really doing great, and for those who haven't been around long enough to know it, it's our goal to make it into the top 100 folding teams. In just the last few weeks, as a team ranking, we’ve gone from being well back in the 600’s to being nicely into the 400’s.

Keep up the good work gang! :)

eric

I know I am happier with the big frame Gromacs on my 2 big boxes (XP2700 and Cele 2.5Ghz), as they are usually done in a few hours and put out some good points (100+ per unit), whilst my little box (Athlon 1.0) seems to do better on 100 frame Tinkers (The gromacs seem to bog it down for days whilst Tinkers take hours). But I noticed I started getting Tinkers on my two big boxes, usually 125 framers, which were taking around 4-5 hours a time but I was only getting something like a paltry 20-30 points per unit.

I am back to getting Gromacs on the big boxes again now (did nothing different, just luck I suppose) and my points have once again started flying up.

So, for me at least, Gromacs seem to give higher points for the time required on the units. Others may have different experiance, but I am gonna try and stick to the big-*** Gromacs (bring on those 10,000 framers!!)

Well I've had a router for a month now and finally decided to attemp it, the install that is. I did it manually and got all the windows machines hooked up to the cable. Then I went to the Linux machine, a different story there. Ending up crashing Mandrake and having to reinstall (twice) so I lost the gromac that I was working on. But I got it! I am now surfing hi speed with Linux and will probably not look at the windows computers for a while.
I'm still not networked to the windows computers but that's ok, I now don't have to worry about folding units finishing and sitting there all day waiting for me to get home and do the dial up thing. So that will help me out on the amount of units I get sent in.

I don’t know if people are keeping track, but our team continues its quick rise through the ranks. At this hour our team ranking is 374 of 33539 total teams. This is great and represents a big jump (from the 600’s to 374) in just the last 3 or 4 weeks. We continue to have new people start folding for us, but some seem to drop off after awhile. Does anyone have any suggestions as to why people are dropping? Can anyone who’s done so let me know what we can do better here? As a team, are we still trying to make it into the top 100? By year’s end?

I assure you I am still folding, slowly but steadily, I'm not going to be guarding my position at all, but I will be checking up on stats as usual :)

Greetings all, I have turned in 2 tinkers today,,one off my P3 in den,,now working a 2500 frame gromac,,,My P4 has JUST sent in another tinker,,,235 points on the first,,will see what the secound score is when Stanford updates next,,,,also Was at Friends house today, Set uphis new PC a HP AMD 2500 ruinning at 1.8mhz,,,and its folding away, on a LARGE Gromac,,will run about 24-30 hrs,,,also My Dad's PC's should also dump in a 400 frame tinker this weekend as well,,,My P4 just DLed a 2500 frame gromac will be done tomorrow,,progress in the works, Glenn
Now that's the way to get people involved and helping with the folding! Are you putting all those folks under your name or on their own?

LOL,,,actually this is a life long friend,,he cares not where the points go,,also will never visit MG site,,just uses his PC for email and work from home,,,but does believe in the good cause of folding !!!,,,so not SUCH a crime,,,,he wants me to have the credit in points,,,so why not recruit his extra machine,,,for our TEAM !!!...its a team project,,and if I can recruit another machine in a persons name or mine,,,it is for the benifit of the TEAM in whole,,Glenn:)
I agree with your technique. I recently enlisted my uncle's computer in the same way. It should start producing very soon I hope. All for the cause. ;)

Just found a virus on the 2.80 computer. I unplugged the network cable first ran updates and scans on the other three win computers and they came up clean. On the 2.8 it took two trys to get the virus deleted but it is supposedly gone now. I should have written the name of it down but I didn't. It was "win 32 something"

I'm a newcomer to MajorGeeks ... and would love to join your team ... but I already have the powder2glass Folding@Home team (http://www.powder2glass.com/Google_Toolbar_Compute/) with a 50-day CPU average of about 60 ... so we ain't doing too shabby! ;-)

Bottom line is we ALL win, since this is for a good cause ... so keep spreading the word about Folding@HOME.

PS if so inclined you can always add all those CPU's to our team ;) LOL,,(JOKE)...glad you are doing so well !!!!

Thanx for the welcome Glenn.

Hey, want to join the powder2glass team - LOL here too! ;-)

Seriousely, we're #5 for Google Computers (and just about to pop into the #4 spot) ... so we are working that angle - our typical Folder is my mom so we are using the Google Toolbar which makes it real simple/easy for 'em, whereas you guys are using the FAH client ... which is better for a number of reasons.

There was some talk in the past about making into the top 100 by Christmas. That is not going to happen, but our progress is great. I estimate that we'll be at about 170 by Christmas. We'll all have to keep adding and keep recruiting if we really want the to get to the top 100.

I am feeling very left behind by mgrist, and lots of pressure from below, so I am forced to do some upgrading. Primary 2 is shifting from an AMD 2500 to a 3200, and then adding the 2500 as a new secondary. Should be done by the end opf this weekend. We'll see if thet helps me to catch the gristmeister!

this is to true
friends of mine have been asking why i feel the need to go out and spend 1200 dollars on 4 new computers. they all think 1 computer is enough.
my response is the more the merreor ( i cna't spell for shat )

so now you all know what my christmas preasent to my self will be.....4 new puters and a switch for the monitors...i think i can connect 4 towers to 1 monitor with the right switch.

this all would make 7 computers 4- 2.5 mghz cellerons, 1- p.4 2.8, 1 -700mghz celleron, and if i can get this p.2 900mghz to fricking work that would make 7 all folding ( and of course downloading as much music as i can.)

.i think i can connect 4 towers to 1 monitor with the right switch.

I've got five (was six) computers all connected to the same monitor-mouse and keyboard and all connected to the internet. I've got two four port KVM switches connected together. One of them was in my closet getting ready to be thrown out. It's a mechanical one and isn't worth a crap and never will be. It controls the two computers I use the least so I don't have to deal with it to much. All this to say get a good switch when you do get one. Let us know your progress on the new computers.
I was, well tried to get a computer on credit. I'm making a bunch of money and really don't have any bills but my credit is still a mess from the divorce so that avenue is out. I could use a good laptop :D For work of course not just to Fold on:rolleyes:

Hey big boy! I've been working full time for somebody else. Over the last twenty years I pretty much worked for myself, so this steady 10 hours a day is killing me. Been over a month now and I'm still not used to it. It's tough on an old man and I'm in good shape. Glad I didn't let myself go over the years, I'd be dead :D
Not sure what you mean by daisy chaining them. I have a four port KVM, it will run four computers from one mouse, monitor, key board. On one port instead of running the cable to a computer I ran it to the input of another KVM switch. So once I switch to that port I then have to use the switch on the second KVM. It was easy stuff, shoot I did it, it must be.

well followed as per instruciones but when I double clicked to get the screen up (after i restarted folding) I lost my monitor input---I hate that feeling.. Anyway I shutdown then restarted and got the folding menu up and chose display, crossed my fingers, and no monitor problem but....it is doing the same WU again and I have zero frames done now---I deleted every file in the work folder so no clue.

fyi I am tripled up.

Yep I've doubled up before. It mentions it on the folding site somewhere. You will get points for both just like it was two different ones.

Hey young-un you can't shut me up by talking about my age, I earned every one of these years. Can't say I'm proud of them all but I earned them :D And anyway I'm only old in experience I'm just upper middle aged in years. As opposed to being wet behind the ears like some other big boys I know. HEHEHEHEHEHEHE

I found a tower on the side of the road
figure I would fix it up just for folding

I see that alot someone locks up or crash's or even just a virus or something and they trash their pc

I am not currently folding something is a miss. . .it takes 3.62 sec forthe little box to come up when I turn off the computer
I dont have that much background apps running

anyway. . .when I get that iron'd out I will uninstall it and install the beta

looking forward to the new core

Hail to Destructo!
(I love it when the new people post to say hi).

Hey guys, if Destructo downloaded all of the work units at the same time, maybe that would explain why he was given the same one?
I would suppose that units are given out many times, to double check?

Anyway, you will be on the board in no time, cranking away.

Onward, team,
Onward we go with new members! We grow in power! :)

Where do I tell. I think that I am running the "graphical client" since it brings up the image of the protein and likes to reek havoc on my monitor connection.

at any rate I'm finally steppin out for the night ill catch up later tonight or tomorrow morning.

I downloaded the first one at least 2 hours before I got to my home comps.

Morning (well afternoon actually) well took a look at my main comp when I got up and it actually wasnt folding! So I started the program and.........no monitor again. So I uninstalled the 503 (it seemed to crash my monitor more) and installed the 502 v. It loaded alright but when I chose to dispay it........BAM! No monitor. Anyway if anyone has 2 cents on it let me know. I'm going to try a newer driver or something.

Destructo
10-17-04, 14:44
The monitor is a 19" logitech VE175 b lcd. This is actually suppose to be my "good" comp. LOL I have had more problems with it then my old standby. I know I have to specs to handle the dang thing. Thats what I hate about comps...its always one stupid little thing that can throw the whole machine out of whack! Anyway I am not too worried about it because as long as I don't check the graphical display I should be fine.....a prob to keep on the back burner for now.

Glad to hear that you survived the Big Three! Out here it's the occassional 3.0 point shake or a tornado every 100 years not to mention no humidity!

Hey Robster how's the script going still slaving away at it :)
Slaving.
Yes.
Slaving.
Hey. The thing is actually coming along. Now, though, I must call it with a cron-job. I have to configure the computer to dial up and get the stats each night.
So, I can configure the cron-job to dial-up, and then another cron-job to dump the stats page to my hdd. However, it then fails.
I ***think*** its because the crond in Slackware (Matthew Dillon's cron) is not quite as capable as the ***usual*** Vixie Cron (or whatever).

So, I try to do it in Fedora. Easy, right?
I wish.
I have trouble now getting wvdial to configure correctly in Fedora.
(The command line dial-up in Slack was easy -- ppp-go).

I must sleep now, though.
I will be out of town this weekend. I will let you guys know if I can get this thing worked out.

By my calculations, at our current pace we are still a bit to slow to ever make it into the top 100 teams. It looks like we will make it to about rank 170 by the end of December 25 (Christmas). Anyone want to start a little pool to see who is closest to guessing our rank by then?

I'm down to running just two computers as of now so the gap will be closing quick. Don't know how long that will last, I'm on two different Folding teams and may jump to one or the other or just leave it like it is.

Put'em all here, mgrist. It's you I'm shooting for, and it will stink if you move on! What with Ironsnipe adding all those CPU's and me trying to do the same, where else are you going to find all this great drama?

Hey when this started I said I do it for fun, to make friends, waste time ETC.... Well all of a sudden I can't say this, I can't do that. " If you just want to chat go here" Well I went there and that got stopped also. It's still a neat site and I'll keep coming here but it isn't fun anymore. I figure as long as I'm Folding it's for a good cause so whether I have 50,000 or 1000 it's all good. I also realize things have got to kept in check when this many people get together on anything so I understand (most) of the moderating. Where I've moved is fun and it's still small enough to beable to goof around and shoot the breeze without stepping on toes. E-mail me or PM me, your contact list is very uninformative :)

I guess I saw a bit of the shutting down of threads, but didn't know about the rest. A real shame because this site/team has great potential. Whatever you decide to do, stay well, keep having fun, and keep on folding.

One other thing, how does one find a way to contact another in this site, other than through the forums? I have no IM SW installed on this CPU.

Does the person (people) running the MajorGeeks forums want to support the "Folding at Home" folders and keep this an informative and entertaining place to be? It seems to me that we're losing some people becuase of strict adherence to rules and regulations. Could there not be a little tolerance and a relaxation of some of the rules? The participation of the folks in the forums is one of the things that makes this a fun place to do folding. Without any activity the fun factor is reduced, excitiment wanes, and participation will drop. It's a shame becasue we have such good potential.

While I have not been a big contributor to this site, it loks to me like people have been asked not to have idle chatter in this section of the board, and then when they moved to another section, they had their thread locked.

More fun=value to the participants. I really enjoy this site and appreciate all the effort that has gone into it and I know that the folks running it can run it any way they want. The question is do they want to allow the folding thing to run it's course and die, or flourish and get into the top 100 (or better!) team rankings? I am hoping for the latter.

Glenn, Honestly. I feel no need to answer to you for anything. I closed G3 because I was attacked directly. Rather than let it continue on in that thread. You even posted to someone else a link to my "how it works" thread and now you post this? I find it contradictory to say the least.

Again, I will repeat. Do not question why we moderate a thread. I've been doing this for years and I know how message boards work. You've said it yourself that you're new to the message board thing.

The Folding forum is for folding discussion. The lounge is for OTHER discussions and we (as mods, admins) hold every right to remove, close or otherwise any thread herein, especially if someone is personally attacked. THAT kind of stuff doesn't jive well with me and your post above is not well recieved. You can post many topics in the lounge, Glenn, if one is closed for some reason, move on and start another. It's not that hard.

Closing a thread is the only way we really have of telling people that what is taking place in a thread is ultimately not acceptable. Your post is dangerously close to insulting and I think I've been more than accomodating, but when it doesn't benefit you, you don't like it. How ironic.

End of discussion.

Good. We're on the same page then.

All I ask is that you understand where I'm coming from. You know I don't go crazy closing posts unless it's necessary. And I KNOW you know that asking politely (read: reopening main folding thread) works alot better than griping.

I'm a very reasonable person, but I don't tolerate childish garbage.

Often times people take things personally when a thread is closed that they are involded in. This is somthing that leads me to believe its time for them to ask a mod (I never get emails or PM's asking) before they start stomping around. Its always resolved if they do. But to start stomping your feet publicly, without asking a mod, is negative to this board. If people ask a mod, they will get a polite explanation and often find out it was not them thats the problem. Dont take things so personally. Its a stupid forum.

Also, Adrynalyne was brought in as a mod today to bring some balance here. A lot of our mods are old timers and work for free tirelessly, but its noce to have fresh blood occasionally to make sure were doing ok.

If people are attacking other, discussing war3z, porn or anything illegal, its shut down and that I will not apologize for.
