Let's see if I can explain this...

A friend connected to a wireless connection at a hotel in Ky.

After leaving the state (we're in Utah now... no chance the network reaches to here), her computer still always shows a connection to that network and automatically connects. Of course, nothing works on it, because the connection doesn't actually exist. No other computers here show that connection.

Strange, yes, but that isn't the crazy part...

My computer has always worked perfectly, and has never shown an invalid wireless connection.

Our computers were sitting next to each other on the table. She turned hers on, worked for a while, then turned it off. Now, my computer always shows a connection to that same nonexistent wireless connection. I can delete it from my list of available networks, but it always finds it again with a strength of 'good'.

Any ideas?

Maybe you're both picking up a wireless network in Utah that is coincidentally broadcasting the same SSID name as the one in KY. Is it something generic, like NETGEAR, or some other brand name?

Before SP1 we used to give demonstrations where we could set a laptop to broadcast a SSID and in turn connect to the laptop. This is a old "wardriving" technique before sp1.

Try deleting and reinstalling your wirless connection in XP. Also try using netstumbler and see if it picks up the SSID, if it does not bill gates is jacking with you.
