I asked in the local computer shop if it was possible to have two computers with their own broadband modems connected to the same phoneline. They didn't know....pah!
Anyone here know if this can be done? Presumably it would make for a faster internet if it can.

ps.I know the other ways of connecting etc etc.

Thanks

OK, I assume you're talking about adsl modems. If that's the case it's not something we can answer on here, you'd have to ask your ISP to be sure.

Most ISP's in my area require you register your MAC addresses with them before the internet will work. So what you're suggesting would be fine. Considering that your ISP allows for 2 or more MAC addresses. In my area the ISP's give each customer 2 IP's as a max. Which means we can register up to 2 MAC's. So we could do what you want.

Of course this whole thing is a little silly if you're doing it for reasons of speed. Because hooking up the modem to a router and then branching off to the computers would be just as fast since the internet speed is 10Mbps as a max and the router speed is going to be 100 or 1000Mbps as a max. So the router is actually A LOT faster then the internet connection. WHich means it's not goign to slow anything down and having two separate adsl modems wouldn't speed things up.

Yes ADSL, I realize a router would be favourite but I just happen to have 3 ADSL modems and at the moment I am using one computer as host with the other one on ICS via a crossover cable. And whenever someone is using the host it seems to realy slow down the other.
Thanks for the info and the answer. :)

Actualy in alot of cases if you want 2 modems(2 connections) you need 2 LAN lines(as in phone lines,,like, diffrent numbers , not just a diffrent wire)
