Internet Connection Problem

Hello,

I am currently have problems with my internet or maybe it's my computer settings. I am using cable as my internet connection. Rogers Cable actually.
I switched from DSL because the DSL service in my area was too poor.

Once I start up my computer I am connected to the internet through my router. Everything works fine. I usually open mIRC, online-radio, msn messenger, and internet explorer & firefox.

Here comes the problem! Once I go inactive for let's say 1 hour. My mIRC would disconnect unable to connect retry like 999 times. Msn messenger is disconnected. I can't use my internet explorer or firefox. BUT! my online-radio is still playing/steaming, and from time to time I like to play online games, I would usually leave it on. and It stays online!

From what I think so far...after I go inactive after 1 hour or more only my online-radio, online-game stay connected. and the rests go offline unable to connect. mainly because I can't use browser ;(

Well, in order to solve this issue. I just usually reboot my computer and everything works fine, but that is such a hazzle!

Anyone know what the problem might be? my ISP provider? my computer settigns? or my router?

PS I usually use my browser a lot, if I do keep surfing on the net constantly with my browser it's stays normal but once I stop using browser for a long period of time. it's unable to connect until i reboot computer ;(

I dont have your answer but try and narrow it down. Reset your router instead of your computer next time and see if it corrects. If it does then you have boiled it down to router and have taken half the choices out. We'll go from there.

I resetted the router and yes it works fine. However the problem occurs afterwards.

It sounds like it could be a router problem then and not your computer. I would try resetting the router to factory defaults and then start from scratch. It will wipe out any goofy config that may be underlying in it. Rebuild what ever WEP, Filters, Securuty tweeks, DHCP, ect.. you had done and give it a shot. I would also check the manufactures website to see if there are any firmware updates for your model.

Interesting, after rebooting the router.

When the disconnection occurs, now at least I get the message "Local Connection Disconnected" "Cable has been unplugged" Then it reconnects itself.

The problem now is....it keeps d/c and reconnects every once in awhile.

Would that be my ISP or my router problem?

and yeah 1 more question, how would upgrade my firmware help? I upgraded the firmware already.

OK, First it would not be your ISP if your Connection pops up connected and then disconnected.
Second, you did not state if you have set factory defaults yet on the router.
Third, Make sure you have IEEE authentification Unchecked. You will find it under the Authentification tab in your Local area connection properties.

Lastly, on you last line.... are you saying that you have already updated your firmware?

I did set factory defaults on my router. The site called it a "hard reset"

Great, sounds like you have done everything you need to do at this time. Let is run for a while and we'll see. If it still drops sporatically I would look at swapping out hardware. BTW, what model Router do you have.

I was actually away for a couple of days. I just got back today. Hmm the problem is still occuring..

Welcome back, The only other thing I could possibly recommend is updating your wirless NIC card.... if available??? One other thing but its a way long shot is interference. 2.4 G is a popular range for a miriad of other devices to include Microwave ovens.

I actually have 2 computers connected to the router. One is connected via direct cable, and another is connected via wireless. However the problem occurs on both computers. Hmmm.. would the problem be the router..? I dun know :P
For the wireless, it matches that 2.4 G thingy. Sorry i don't know the terminology for it. It interferes with my cordless phone also hehe.

Hiyooo, It does sound like it the router. I would have to revert to my post on the 27th, swapping it out. Unless of course there are others out there that have better reccomendations than me :)

I'll see what happens in a couple of days. If it still occurs, I think I will go exchange for a new one. It says "Life time warranty" I hope so!
