Hi everyone,

This is my first post so if I have deposited it in the wrong forum section I apologize.

I have just purchased a G4 Powerbook off an individual on Ebay and am having some issues.

Processor Speed: 1.5 ghz
RAM: 768 MB
HD Capacity: 80 GB

operating system: Mac OS X Panther

The startup time is outlandishly sluggish (20 minutes)

Once it is going for a while, everything seems to be fine, except the inability to open certain programs (noteably Garage Band and Final Cut Pro) On these particular programs I'll get a spinning beach ball until the application unexpectedly quits.

I also have no sound, but I'm going to try a technique described in another post by some helpful folks.

Any help would be greaaaaatefully appreciated.

Thank You!

Try an "Archive" re-install of the Mac OS. Any data you have on your "Home" shoyuld be moved to a folder on your HD. Insert Mac OS 10.3.x CD in and choose install. System will restart. Answer okay untilyou get to the Destination Drive Choice. Choose your HD and click options. Make certain Archive Install is chosen and hit okay. Follow through the rest answering accordingly (yes to all).

This will move your old System OS to an Archive folder and install a fresh copy of the OS. If all works properly, eventually throw out the Old SystemFolder.

Thank You acktom.

I really appreciate you taking the time.

Turns out i lied about which version of OS i'm running. It has been upgraded to Tiger, but the manual and software that was shipped is Panther.

Will the archive install of OS preserve the applications in your estimation? I'd hate to lose them.

Yes. The archive install will not effect any of your Applications. Be sure to back up items in your "Home" such as MS Entourage Data.
