I've downloaded a TV programme from the BBC to watch in the format as a wmv file and I've right clicked on it and selected from the menu: Play with Windows Media Player.

I clicked on Start>All Programs and right clicked on Windows Media Player and selected: Run as administrator. The User Account Control box opened and I clicked on Continue. Nothing happened.

In a final attempt I clicked on Start>Computer>C (my hard drive)>Program Files>Windows Media Player and then clicked an wmplayer the application itself.

Nothing at all happens. I receive no error message whatsoever. What could be the problem? How might I solve it?

My version of Windows Media Player is version 11.

I notice that if select page > Save As from the IE toolbar (if that's what it's called) and I save, the file type is *.mht When I open it, it appears in IE. My real question is is the page saved as I see it, or is it just a pointer or web address that is just accessing the internet for that page, and will disappear with some error if the web page is removed ?
(of course I could print the file to disk using a pdf printer or MS XPS to effective make a hardcopy)
I had to replace my old gigabyte mobo because this cheif max p/s burn the p4 plug causing a bad reading with the replacement P/S instead of a +5 reading I was getting a +3.66v reading. After a while the P/S died and I got another one ... still got the bad reading .... So I got the same mobo.

When I was trying to remove the fan and heat sink the cpu was stuck to it and it came out with the sink ... some of the pins were bent and I straight them out the best I could. It locked in the holder of the new mobo ... I hooked everything back up, and powered it up ... NOTHING but a clicking sound ... no system beep (s) the P/S fan is turning and the cpu fan is turning but the GPU fan is not turning ... I have the power hooked up to it, but nothing. It was working before I pulled the old mobo.

Anyone knows what's up with this?:cry:confused

Hi, I've got a problem. I have a FireWire card in my PC (Windows 7 - 64) and a camera that connects via FireWire. The problem is getting the computer to recognize the camera via FireWire. I've tried clicking Add a device under devices and printers. I've tried Scan for hardware changes in Device Manager. I've tried adding legacy devices in Device Manager. I've tried restarting the computer with the camera plugged into FW and on, I've tried it witht the camera off then logging into my account then turning the camera on. I've tried playing the tape in the camera, then plug the cord into it. I've tried plugging the cord in then turning on the camera and playing the tape. etc.......

The funny thing is eventually it just works for seemingly no reason, but by the time it finally recognizes the camera the battery is half dead and if I don't transfer pretty quickly the battery will die before the tape is done.

If this were USB I'd run something like USBDeview and see what it thinks is plugged in. But I don't see anything like that for FireWire.

Any help or insight is appreciated.

My OS is 98SE. I use a bootup that is verbose - it always gives me the option to load step-by-step, bootlog, safe mode, pure dos, etc. I know the routine that appears on my screen, but sometimes it's different. Sometimes the information suddenly spreads out with a lot of geek symbols, and on occasion the symbols are in COLOR! Which should never happen.

I have to assume this is malware, but when I do a scan after it happens, I never find one.

This has happened for a long time - not often, only a few times a year. But today's malware is nastier, so I worry.

When this does happen, what should I do?

There are also times during bootup when I get the notice that Windows is adjusting my system settings, yet I hadn't installed anything the last time I was using my PC. Of course, sometimes I realize that I had installed something, but there are other times when I KNOW I hadn't. Which tells me something was installing itself.

Where and how can I look to learn just WHAT Windows had just installed? Is there a way to thwart the install while it is going on? Like turning off the PC real fast?

There is a problem that has occurred several times over the years, where something erased the TTFontDimensionCache in System.ini. It makes windows load defective or not at all. I now keep a copy of that cache, so I can insert it into the System.ini file whenever I find it missing. Could it be anything BUT malware causing this? I never have found it, no matter how hard I searched. But it still happens sometimes.

What's doing that? How can I find where it's hiding?

When I boot up, my system, which is "always online" is vulnerable, isn't it? That's the time between pushing the button to start booting up and the time when Windows 98SE is loaded and I can make the ZoneAlarm padlock icon turn red - stopping ALL internet traffic.

I'd like to have an idea of just HOW vulnerable my system is during that interval. ZA is great, but only protects me when it is loaded into Windows. Also, being an older OS, my ZA isn't the highest version. Malware gets through at times, and I wonder if that happens during bootup.

There are always occasions when I spend some time before loading Windows. Such as doing scans in DOS or doing some stuff in Safe Mode. Am I online and vulnerable? Should I turn OFF my modem until Windows is fully launched?

A recent upgrade by my IPS gave me fiber optic lines (wow!) and a new modem. I no longer have to start TangoManager to go online; I just click the icon for my browser. It's cool. Except for this little worry.

Anyone know how vulnerable I am during bootup?

Ok, long story short, my sound is not working. However, I wouldn't come here and post this if I didn't try everything and wasn't desperate. The problem I'm having is very odd. The long, in depth analysis is posted below.

My PC setup is as follows:
Operating System
MS Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1
CPU
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40GHz	42 °C
Kentsfield 65nm Technology
RAM
8.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 400MHz (5-5-5-15)
Motherboard
Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. EP45-UD3P (Socket 775)	31 °C
Graphics
DELL U2711 (2560x1440@59Hz)
1024MB GeForce GTX 550 Ti (EVGA)	47 °C
Audio
Creative Audigy Audio Processor (WDM)
I'm attaching a text file from speccy for more detailed info.

Here's the details of the problem. I custom built my PC from scratch, and my onboard sound card was working fine all these years. It's a built in Realtek card on the Gigagbit motherboard, and it had no issues. My video card was recently RMA'ed, and I got a Nvidia GTX550 Ti as a replacement. When I installed the card and installed the nvidia drivers, I noticed that it installed an nVidia HD audio driver. There are 4 that shows up under device manager, so I looked into it, and it's supposedly the built in HDMI audio on the card.

After that, my audio would have issues from time to time, so I figured I should just install the newest Realtek driver. Bad idea. Since I updated my audio driver to the latest realtek driver, my audio is completely gone. Realtek doesn't even show up in device manager anymore. Sometimes downloading a new copy and installing would work, but then I would get random Blue screen of death, and after restart, I would have no audio. I tried uninstalling and re-installing at least 5 times, no luck. I uninstalled nvidia drivers and tried realtek, still nothing. Infact, I can't get rid of the nvidia audio drivers, as windows automatically scans it at start up and installs it. I used Driver Sweeper AND DCleaner to clean all the realtek registry info, but it's still not helping. I tinkered with it for 6 hours yesterday, no solution.

I got frustrated, and borrowed an old Creative Lab Audigy sound card from a friend yesterday. I plugged it in, and it worked right off the back. I put my computer to sleep at night, and when I woke it up in the morning, after 10 minutes, BSOD again saying something like "driver incompatibility" or something along that line, and restarts. Now, sound is gone once again. The speaker on the bottom corner is not red though, so I think the sound card is still working and the PC can read it, but I'm guessing the computer is trying to use the onboard realtek card first, so no audio is coming out from my headphones.

I tried everything. I spent 3 hours this morning, and am pretty frustrated. If anyone can help me, please tell me what to do.

She's got ten Word documents saved; 16 songs; and about 60 pictures. I am completely puzzled as to how a 31 GB can be full with only that amount of stuff on it. There should be loads of space left. My computer has far more stuff and is no where near as full.

What I need help with is how can I determine if it is genuinely full or if some form of malware is trying to fool us into thinking it's full. I really am perplexed by this!
Info if required:

Computer - Advent DIXONSXP Notebook
Operating system - Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2

Hello all this is a strange problem and I have tired to fix it but can't seem to.

We have a HP EliteBoook 8440p that was working well and one day after a driver update to the intel internal graphics card( built into the cpu i5) all went bad.

With the intel driver installed the laptop screen works while hooked up to the dock or ac power but not when disconnected from the power, the screen is blank. It lights up but nothing displays. Hooked up to the dock it can do extended desktop on the other monitor no problem and even the laptop screen works. Disconnect it and it goes blank.

The only way we have found to get the internal screen to workon battery is to uninstall the intel driver and go to the stock one. Then the screen works but we can't do any external monitors or presentations.

Has anyone ever seen this before and have a fix for it?
