    Ok, here's my story.

I got a new pc to use as a streaming device on my tv. Connected it up but got a little anxious and went to Primewire to test it out before loading antivirus and adblockplus. I got a new tab with a threatening note stating that the hard disk would be deleted if I didn't pay them. The website was either www.tradeadexchange.com or p7dntrax.com. I've included a screenshot from Chrome history of the sites as an attachment.

I then downloaded AVG antivirus to try and run a scan. It failed to load and gave me an error code of 0xe001d029. I tried to look this up on their site but gave up. Rebooted and tried to load AVG with the same failure code.

I've been using the same computer to post this and run the various scripts and scans, so I'm not sure that there is a problem. Maybe the site is just a threat and does not inject malware. I didn't want to take the chance so I visited MajorGeeks to check it out.

Downloaded all the files and performed the scans requested.

RogueKiller - ran the scan and it failed at the same point twice (while scanning the SmartAudio.exe file.) I went into taskmanager and killed two tasks associated with SmartAudio and reran RogueKiller successfully. The log file is attached.
Malwarebytes ran successfully and found no errors. I did not attach a log file.
TDSSkiller ran successfully and found no errors. Log file is attached.
HitmanPro ran successfully. The log file is attached.
MGtools ran successfully with one error. HijackThis kicked out a message that said it could not access the 'hosts.' file. I followed their instructions and looked at the file specified. There were only comments and no entries. The MGtools log file is attached.

So that is where I stand. The system is running fine now but I feel it is compromised. I'd really like to get AVG installed and feel comfortable that it is safe. None of the scans showed any malware. The SmartAudio.exe problem with Roguekiller makes me nervous though.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Dan

I am seeing no malware in those logs.
With regards to avg, try running the avg removal tool and after reboot, try again to install it.
If it still fails to install after this then you should post about it in the software forum, or on the avg forums.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was able to get AVG to load after I disabled SmartAudio in startup (I think). I downloaded and reinstalled the SmartAudio drivers but have been afraid to re-enable it in startup. It doesn't seem to be missed by the system as audio plays just fine.

Anyway, so far so good. Now if I could just get the beast to upgrade to Win 10, I'd be fine. It fails every time.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.

    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
