Some people see it as too commercial.

Others may wonder why we celebrate a day named for a Christian martyr dating back to the 5th century.

Has the true meaning of St Valentine's Day been lost when reading about him?

What the heck, I reckon it's good day to show someone you care (as a reminder in case you forgot the other 364 days!;))

    How about you?

I've never played along with it, regardless of whether I'm currently seeing someone or not. It bugs the crap out of me that florists, candy makers, jewelers, and greeting card companies have decided that one day a year we should spend ungodly amounts of money to "prove" we love someone. I much prefer little gifts throughout the year on random occasions or for no real reason, because I've always felt if you need a reminder that you should tell someone you love them, then maybe that's not the relationship for you.

Besides which, much like the major Christian holidays, this one was co-opted from a Pagan festival in order to convert the Pagans. Pre-dates St. Valentine by quite a lot.

I personally don't have a problem with a day set aside to express love for others. I do agree showing your love and appreciation of that special person and everyone you care about for that matter should be obvious everyday not just that one day of the year.

Having said that, I don't get why people feel the need to send the flowers and candy to the work place instead of doing it in a personal way. Especially when you will be seeing that person later that day. It just seems like showing off to me and not romantic at all. But that is just my opinion.

    HAPPY VALENTINES EVERYONE

There is nothing wrong with designating a day of the year for officially taking a moment to put time and effort into showing your partner how much you appreciate having him or her in your life, and why. If anything, that concept of Valentine's Day is something I can completely get behind. It irritates me that Hallmark and the discount mall jewelers are taking over a day that was supposed to be about why he and I are together, and are turning it into a commercial glitz and schmaltz fest of tasteless pink cards with lace on the front.

I dislike that part of the Valentine's Day hype, and I love the fact that I have married a man who gets that, and who earlier today told me that unless I told him he has to do it, he's not giving me either flowers or chocolate for Valentine's Day this year. He and I agree that if he gives me flowers on a day when he is supposed to give me flowers, it means nothing and is, at best, an empty gesture.

On the other hand, the gift box of expensive high-end chocolate he gave me last week, just because he thought I would like them, that gesture had "I love you" written all over it. :)

Because displaying those flowers for everyone at work and explaining that, "oh he just wanted me to know he loves me and he's thinking of me" is 90% of the fun of receiving flowers. Duh.

Who cares if snotty Miss Perfect got the promotion we both wanted? Her husband expects her to do 90% of the house work, is jealous and resentful that she got promoted before he did, and it would never occur to him to send her flowers for no other reason than to make her happy.

So yes, she might look like super model. She might have a genius level IQ and beautiful perfect children, and she might have the career of her dreams.

I have a husband who sends me out-of-nowhere-and for-no-reason flowers just because he loves me and wants to make me smile.

    I WIN.

Me too and I love that. However, I also love the long stem roses he got me for Valentine's day as well. :D Mostly, I just love flowers.

I don't have an issue with it either. Same on the whole Hallmark thing though. A waste of money.

I use it as an excuse to make a fancy dinner for the two of us...and my kids if they are around because I love them as well. Just to be clear, my husband and I are beyond needing a day to spend quality time without kids. Our kids are pretty much gone so it's just us now...having the kids around for a day like this is special.

I'm making a lobster dinner tomorrow night which is as much for me as my hubby. :D

Happy Valentine's Day to you all!

If Valentine's Day falls on a work day I always send roses to my wife's work. She used to work in an admin role in HR at a major university and most of the other people in the office complain about their husbands/wives and how unhappy they are being married. She was one of the few people to ever get flowers and it was worth every cent just knowing how envious her work colleagues were. To make sure it had the most impact I always gave the address as the main reception area which is in another building so then they have to walk the flowers through two buildings around to her department ;)

I don't mind the commercial side of Valentine's Day as other people need to make a dollar too and it is only once a year unless you want to rope in Christmas and Easter. Besides nobody makes you spend the money on flowers or chocolates

Tonight Mrs. joffa and I are going out to a nice restaurant and then off to the movies :D:D:cool:

    Happy Valentine's Day everyone! :cool::cool:

Agreed – but personally, there is no harm in having one day a year dedicated – can be a fun day.

Well, I hang my head here (mia culpa, mia culpa) due to work and study demands there have been times (apart from Birthdays and Christmas) where Valentine’s Day has forced me to look up and pay attention. And I must admit it has always been a wonderfully enjoyable nudge of remembrance. So personally it wasn’t a matter of not being in the right relationship but rather looking at and timing of priorities.

It’s taken me a while, but I’m finally getting priorities for a work/life balance.

Today for Valentine’s we headed off to a bushland spot overlooking the Harbour and had a picnic. Perfect day, no distractions, mobiles turned off and just relaxed in the shade enjoying each other’s company. :)

I by and large do not support the rabid commercialism of valentines day . . . but I still buy the wife some flowers every Feb 14th. I used to send them to her work, but now that her health doesn't allow her to do much I just bring them home. I do it on this day and many other days, just because (like Mimsy said) it makes her smile, and that is the most beautiful sight in the universe.

SHEWHOMUSTBEOBEYED years (many) ago forbad me from ever again giving her or surprising her with flowers. She says she loves them but can't stand to see them die and wilt. So, I have to just be content to sneak off and get her a mushy loveyou card and then try to hide it around the house or car somewhere where she can't find it til this morning, as she did. However, when we were dating, I once sent a male stripper dressed as a cop to her office where he embarrassed the living daylights out of her, cuffing her to her chair and lap-dancing her in front of the girls in her office. Classic. Wonderful. I keep trying to think of one better but haven't been able to for years. That was 25 years ago now. Maybe I'll just wait til we both have Alzheimers and do it again. The devil made me do it.
