I was restarting the computer and got this error: Driver_Power_State_Failure

I believe that has to do with hardware drivers?

    Here is my system:
    windows 10
    HP Pavillion 500-336
Devices that I have plugged in:
    -Fujitsu fi-7160
-A Trendnet tk-209k KVM switch (other computer that it's plugged into is a Mac, which it's not technically compatible with, but works 99% of the time)
    -A microsoft optical mouse

    Yes, a BSOD/bugcheck with
STOP 0x0000009F: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE is a device driver fault, though not necessarily a driver for a hardware device, it could also be a driver/filter for software that needs to work closely with the OS, such as antivirus/firewall, etc..

Windows 10 and the timing suggests that Windows Update updated a driver that was unsuitable, can you check WU to find out what's been updated in the last few restarts?

Hi, Satrow. Thank you very much for the replay.
    What is WU?
But yes, you could be right. The restart (on the power down side) was taking a very long time so I imagine that Windows was doing some updates.

A couple of times today when I was switching windows in Google Chrome, a lot of the screen went black (except for the white outlines of some of the window dialogue box). One time when this happened, it produced an error message about the display driver.

    Windows Update.

A display driver message (stopped responding?) while you have flashing in Chrome, that suggests a TDR 116/117, another graphics problem, in this case probably the graphics driver (recently installed by WU?) is at fault.

Does HP Support/downloads for your machine have a driver for W10 that you can install?

I have been having ongoing issues with the graphics card (onboard graphics). Just didn't have a chance to come back here and update.

I tried using the HP support assistant. That just came up with some annoying messages such as "create your system recovery" and "windows firewall is not enabled." I think I installed a couple of things, too, such as "HP Network Check for Internet Explorer." But, nothing video driver related.

I then went to Windows 10 device manager and clicked properties of the video card, and then had Windows search for the drivers. But, it didn't find any updated drivers (last update I can see was about a year ago, which is actually a little strange because I did a clean install of my operating system more recently than that). By the way, the motherboard seems to have HD Graphics 4000 as the onboard video (based on what it says in device manager). It's strange that on the HP product specifications page it says that "this motherboard supports processors with the following integrated graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4400 (GT2) and Intel HD Graphics 4600 (GT2)." I guess HP was being lazy and just copying and pasting the info instead of stating the info for this specific system :) Here is the spec page for this computer: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04345595

Next, I went on the web and searched specifically for the drivers. Seems there are some more recent drivers released. It seems that the top one on this list would apply: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/pr...4400-for-4th-Generation-Intel-Core-Processors. But, once you click on that I got sucked in by this "Intel Driver Update Utility." When I ran that, it said no updates found, just like Windows was saying.

Should I manually uninstall the driver that I have now and then install the one that I found with the release date of 6/17/16? I found this driver by searching for the graphics card that I see in device manager. But, when I look at the download page of the driver, I actually don't see my processor on that list. According to HP's website, my processor is Intel Core i3 4130.

I am not really qualified to comment here and so this is just pure speculation. But here is what I guess is happening. The wrong driver is somehow installed, and that driver happens to be the most up to date version (but it's not made for my hardware, it's made for some other hardware). And so that's why these softwares are not detecting that there is a more recent version. I am guessing that these softwares are not looking at my actual hardware, they are just looking at the software drivers that are installed on my machine and comparing those to some set of drivers available for download.

Cliffs: HP support assistant didn't find anything (on a scale of 1-10 how competent is this tool?). Windows 10 didn't find anything, and an Intel Utility didn't find anything. But, there are possibly new drivers available (read 2 paragraphs up).

^^ This needs investigating, it's important to have a firewall active.

Can you collect and attach some data for us? Visit Sysnative and carefully follow the instructions there, attach the required zipped file back here, please? That should furnish us with further cues as to what's been happening.

originally windows 8.1 but I tried to reformat, erase partitions, and install windows 10
    full retail version
Purchased in Jan 2015 but used very little, only as a secondary computer up until a couple of months ago.
    Installed windows 10 around 4/10/16
    4th generation Intel Core i3 4130.
    Intel HD Graphics 4400 (GT2)

Okay, I've taken a look through my usual logs there, attempted to debug both the attached crash dump files and I'm hitting dead ends (my debugging skills are basic).

What I believe to be the main points from I can see:

2x 0x9F crashes, slightly different types but possibly down to the same cause, both seem to be networking related.

Multiple TDRs (VIDEO_TDR_TIMEOUT_DETECTED (117)), as suspected, the screen flashing etc., reported by WER (Windows Error Reporting)

    Multiple SkyDrive (OneDrive) crashes.

Possible/likely security clashes, too many software checking the same networking/browser calls.

Multiple Cloud backup software running, OneDrive, Google Drive and Zoolz.

The 0x9F's and TDRs are broadly similar in that they can both be caused by Windows calls being blocked by a succession of different drivers, each waiting in the queue for an earlier one to finish.

Similar scenario with security software, Defender might be waiting to check a browser call/file, it has to wait for the Malwarebytes Web Access Control, which might in turn be waiting for an Eset (possible one of several!) process to finish checking. If any of these needs a double-check from the Cloud, it's pretty easy to figure out that the time taken might be considerable.

Add in the 3 different Cloud backup services that might be trying to upload/download whilst all this is going on...

    Suggested steps:
During troubleshooting, I suggest you uninstall Eset, use their uninstall routine from Support/their forum as well to be sure no remnant is left.

Enable both Windows Defender and firewall.

Reduce your auto-starting Cloud software to just one program (MS' own OneDrive should be least likely to cause issues).

Check for and install any updates for 3rd party software/drivers, especially those that are Internet-facing (3rd party driver list below).

Check Device Manager's Properties for your Networking and USB components and ensure that Power-saving features are disabled (look for a Power tab).

I am struggling a little bit here...
So far, I have uninstalled Eset nod, took onedrive & google drive out of the startup (I don't really use onedrive anyway, I use google drive regularly and dropbox occassionally). The reason that I don't use onedrive is because it doesnt offer much free storage space (I currently have 10 GB used in Google Drive).
I opened device manager and right clicked on all of the devices and "updated driver" (or similar). None of them found any updates. In my previous post I described finding the drivers on the web with the plan of trying to install the downloaded driver. I seemed to have found a more recent video driver but was a little unsure on pulling the trigger. I feel more confident now, though. Is there a major drawback to installing this driver?
As far as updating each software application that I have installed on my computer, I am finding that a little bit difficult to do. I suppose I go through the list of apps in the control panel and try to determine their current version, and compare that to what's available for download on the web? Ran into difficulty in figuring out how to handle a scanning software that I have. It's tough to find the information about which version I am using. Generally, I am new to Windows 10 and I am finding it cumbersome to find programs. There are a lot of apps on the list in the start menu and the search results are liberal.

One thing that I noticed is that for one of the printers (Dell 1355cnw, which I just have hooked up so that I can use out the rest of the ink, have a new replacement printer), the manufacturer doesn't list Windows 10 on the list of operating systems. But, I do see it in their general list of "printers supported by windows 10."

Another thing is that I have these printers hooked up to the network, wired. You seemed to be concerned about a lot of traffic over the network / web so I thought I'd point that out.

cliffs: I am a little bit confused about the procedure for updating drivers. I am not sure the repercussions/ how hot you are on me manually downloading drivers from the web.
Dreading task of figuring out what version of every program that I have installed vs. available version. It's tough to figure out what version each program is and for example there are 5 programs for one of my scanners.

my computer is also freezing up for several seconds pretty regularly. Just a minute ago I had outlook running and I was printing 1 email to PDF. The program froze for several seconds and even displayed the message " not responding" for a little.

Okay, you've made more progress. Try searching for newer drivers via the links at the bottom of my previous post, you can usually find more recent genuine drivers than MS issue (their test/release program takes time).

With 3rd party software that isn't related to the drivers/filters listed above, there's a lower chance that they might be implicated in the errors logged, they operate in an outer ring, further away from the Windows kernel. So so, for troubleshooting the freezes, etc., I think they can go on the back burner, lower priority.

I really don't do 'networking' or printing, I disable everything here and each PC is unreachable from another (heck, Windows often doesn't think it's connected to the 'net), so I don't have a real 'feel' for what you're describing, some of which might be from the 'autodetect across all possible connections and protocols' shotgun method that seems to be MS' default approach.

Even though you might have 5 different pieces of software for a printer, the chances of normal usage triggering more than one of those is remote, outside of you manually going through a workflow that requires multiples of them.

For now, make notes of what you change/upgrade. Tomorrow, take a look through the Reliability reports and see whether there have been improvements over the last few days, report back on any recurring issues logged there, with details. We'll try to work through them.

I can't figure out how to handle one drive.
I tried one fix which I believe was disabling it from launching at start up. It seemed to go away for a while but then eventually came back (I don't have any theories of what triggered that).
I came across this forum where people are talking about editing the registry, which I am a little hesitant about. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...0/6c9f6e32-4306-4c4a-8a37-0708951b70fe?auth=1
Then I thought I'd try to uninstall it using the command line. But, I get an error.
    http://lifehacker.com/how-to-completely-uninstall-onedrive-in-windows-10-1725363532
But, I get an error in the command line on step 3, when I type this
    %SystemRoot%\SysWOW64\OneDriveSetup.exe /uninstall
Also, it's not like I am dead set on uninstalling One Drive. But, if that's the only way to stop getting it to not load in the system tray, ever, then that's what I will have to do.

I got lost in going through your list.

Here is the first link that I think you are talking about:
    stwrt64.sys Thu Nov 7 06:12:44 2013 (527B2F5C)
SigmaTel High Definition Audio Codec OEM - none at http://www.freescale.com/webapp/search/Serp.jsp?SelectedAsset=Downloads
My experience with this: Seems like a dead link? Or I should use that website for searching for some sort of audio drivers?

    http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=stwrt64.sys
Similar as above but I do see that it says:
    Driver Description:
    SigmaTel High Definition Audio Codec
Driver Update Site: OEM - none at http://www.freescale.com/webapp/search/Serp.jsp?SelectedAsset=Downloads

I guess I am not clear on what we are doing here. Shouldn't I just be on the company or developer's website that created the drivers, seeing if there is anything more recent.

Also, remember in the previous post where I thought I found a newer video driver? Well, why shouldn't I install that? Without understanding the answer to that question, maybe I am too much of a newbie to proceed with other drivers. Are these "detect new driver softwares, like the one that I downloaded before, the next step in the process here?

  16. Silverthunder

    Silverthunder Sergeant

I think I might understand a little better now what to do. Looking at this page: http://www.carrona.org/dvrref.php
I found 2 "SigmaTel High Definition Audio Codec" non-hyperlink results. So, maybe I need to download the stwrt64.sys file, and point windows towards that driver for audio?

I am probably asking a lot of basic questions here. But, somehow I have almost never had to delve into the driver world, except at the time of installing new hardware. It's not like I am a computer newb, though. But, maybe the absence of dealing with drivers is a cause of some computer troubles over the years.

Another issue that I have is that I got a new internal hard drive, which I tried to connect using an adapter so that it could plug into a USB port. But, disk utility would not see the drive. When I plug the drive into my Mac, though, it worked.

If a MAC sees it but not a PC then it is probably formatted for a MAC.

I think concentrating updating on network-related drivers and auto-running network/cloud software, plus the security software that will be checking network traffic should be priority. Unless you notice certain problems that seem to occur only when audio is playing, I'd leave updating the sound drivers for later.

I'm unsure of how far you've got with disabling/removing One Drive from startup (and I can't easily test it here without undoing several of the 'fixes' I've already made). Can you manually start One Drive - if so, is there a built-in option to prevent it from running at each boot?

What do you mean by network related drivers? I am guessing that you mean network card, and any devices used by this computer on the network (which in my case happens to be 2 printers).

As for One Drive, I seem to have gotten it out of the startup. But, it seems to enter into the tray icon some time later (today, it showed up about 2 hours after boot up, prompting that it wants to know which folders to sync with on my computer).

Yes, network hardware plus any software that runs over the network (security software often use drivers/filters that might be problematic under certain circumstances).

Perhaps One Drive is triggered via Task Scheduler in Management? When you open One Drive from the icon in the Systray after the pop-up prompt, is there an option to disable it?

I have tried to change the settings to disable one drive as much as possible. In the settings, I uncheck "start Onedrive automatically when I sign in to Windows." But, Onedrive seems to manage reversing that on me on or before when its icon starts showing again in the tray icon.

I just let OneDrive set itself a folder directory but I have it not syncing any files. Maybe now since it has a folder, it will "calm itself" :) So now it does have a directory but I have it set to sync no files.

Maybe I should try posting over in Microsoft forums about the issue with OneDrive?

Other idea is to unlink my microsoft outlook (or whatever they call it these days) from Windows 10. My only objection to that is that I was going to explore the calendar feature of that because I need to figure out which calendar program I am going to start using now (I used to use gmail and that would interface nicely with Apple's calendar program).

No Sync, no files should be okay during troubleshooting. I don't use Outlook, can't help you there.

I know you said that you don't have a lot of expertise with network printers. But, I'll shoot anyway, as I see this question as more general anyway.
In the Dell printer drivers details, it says that I have driver version 10.0.10586.0 with a driver date of 6/21/2006. It shows a printer name of "DellA4F942." This is the printer that shows in the drop down list when I am printing. This "DellA4F942" shows under "print Queues" and under "WSD print provider." Under printers, though, I do see "Dell 1355 cn HBP." I am not sure what the HBP stands for but I think plain "cn" instead of "cnw" are very similar models that use the same driver.

When I right click on the printer "Dell 1355cn HBP," there is no driver "tab" showing. Same thing with the other printers (I have 1 other printer, plus it has a "fax side."). Maybe I should try uninstalling "Della..." under print queues, "Della..." under print provider, and "Dell 1355cn HBP" and download the software from the manufacturer's website: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/product/dell-1355cn-cwn/drivers?os=wt64a

The Dell drivers and software are listed as 2015/16 and W10 compatible, I would certainly download and install the drivers for the parts that you use and go through the uninstall printer, reboot, install drivers, connect printer routine.

I am not sure how to uninstall and reinstall the drivers.
Here is what I have done in an attempt to uninstall: I found some software from the add/remove programs list. It was titled something like "Dell Document manager." Iobit uninstaller did not have this program on its list so I just used Windows add/remove programs feature. I turned off the printer.
Next, I noticed the printer listed under "print queues," "printers," and "wsd print provider." Wasn't sure which one to uninstall first so I rolled the dice and uninstalled the WSD Print Provider one." That uninstalled the device from the other 2 lists.
Next, I downloaded drivers for the print function (there are also ones for faxing and scanning). The 64 bit drivers seem to consist of 3 files. A Cabinet file (.cab), a security catalogue (.cat), and system information (.inf). These are all in the 64 bit folder of the unzipped driver files.
I am not sure how to install these. I deleted the printer from the Windows screen that shows all of the devices. Then, I powered on the printer, searched for the printer using the search function in Windows. Windows does not give you the option of selecting a location for the driver, it just wants to install it itself once it has found the device.
Should I now try to use the "update driver software." Dell's website seemed to have cautioned against installing drivers over drivers that are already there (general cautionary message, not specific to this printer)
Another thing that I noticed is that in one of the sections where Windows shows you the installed devices, in the section where my router is, there is an "unknown device." That must be a HUB that I recently put in. I put that in so that I could have my 3 computers and 2 network printers all wired.

Also, just now when I was shutting down my computer, I got this error message:
The instruction at 0x0000000D3FD8 referenced memory at 0x0000000D3FD8. The memory could not be written.
I am not sure how many zeros there are between the x and the D, in those 2 strings of characters.

To install the new printer drivers, point the Found New Hardware wizard, or Device Manager's updater, to the folder with the unzipped .inf file.

The 0xD3FD8 error is some an action from data located at that memory location reporting that it can't find the data, probably because Windows is shutting down. Probably nothing to worry about.

If you set Device Manager to View Devices by Connection, you should be able to find out what the unknown device is connected to and work out what it is from that.

That's the whole problem. I can't seem to figure out how to let the install process let me select where the drivers are.

wasn't having any luck with that. That seems to reference having the printer plugged in directly to the computer (I have the printer plugged in to the network). I will poke around a little bit, maybe even try plugging the printer directly into my computer. I will also dig up the user manual and see if that sheds any light on things.

Ok, I just gave up on the printer. I have it up on Craigslist & Ebay for sale now :)

Microsoft One drive seems to be pretty "subdued" now, too.

    2 things to tackle next:
1- under devices and printers -> multimedia devices, there are 2 devices. One is titled "fiostv" followed by a series of letters and numbers. Fios is the name of the internet service, it's offered by Verizon. Strange that it has TV in the name. That device must either be my router or my cable TV box. But, I think I can rule out cable TV box because I completely disconnected that. Also, I don't think it would make sense to have that showing as the router is connected to a coaxial splitter and the other half of the splitter runs to the cable TV box. Would Windows 10 even detect that? The other device under multimedia devices is titled "unknown device." I am really not sure what that could be except for a 4 port switch that I have. I know you said that you don't do much with network devices. But, can we even be sure that this is a network device (remember, it's under the multimedia device category)? If that device is the switch, would we want to update its firmware (is that the right word)?

2- I am still very lost on process of updating drivers. What are the steps to doing this? I am assuming that it goes something like this: (1) looking at HP's information about each of my hardware components are; (2) checking that that's what shows in device manager (as opposed to Windows having drivers for the wrong device installed; (3) looking at properties of that device to see driver version or date; (4) download newer drivers from manufacturer's website (actual manufacturer of the part). After this I get a little lost. Are we always uninstalling the drivers first? There seem to be a lot of places in Windows where it shows device information. For example, with the printer that I just gave up on, it had the device showing under control panel -> hardware and sound -> devices and printers. Next, there was the older looking "device manager" screen. That had the printer showing under "print queues, printers, and WSD print provider.

New problem that I am running into (not sure if I am correct in posting this in same thread.):

For about the past half day, I have been seeing the circle icon next to my cursor. It's the icon the means "loading or running a process." I am sure that you can picture it.
I opened the task manager and here is some data:
service host: DCOM server process launcher is hovering around 10%
shell infastructure host is hovering around 9%

    CPU usage at 85%
    memory useage at 69%

All that I had running is internet explorer. The programs that I have set to run in the background are a cloud backup tool called zoolz, malwarebytes, and cryptoprevent?

The computer stopped doing the stuff the I mentioned in my previous post once I rebooted. Mysterious because I had tried rebooting before and it didn't solve the problem on the first reboot. I have the same programs opened as before & more (chrome, outlook, and a folder).

Guess I spoke too soon. Now it's back.. Seems like it kicks in when having 3 browser windows of Google Chrome opened.
