Description of the update for Silverlight: September 1, 2010

Issues that are fixed by this update
Issue 1
This update improves the native extensibility of media stream source that uses the Silverlight technology and the Expression Encoder.
Issue 2
This update enables new Add Row functionality in the Silverlight DataGrid control.
Issue 3
This update enables you to increase the isolated storage size through registry keys or Group Policy settings.
Issue 4
This update improves the startup performance of applications on a computer that enables the Silverlight technology.
Issue 5
This update adds the mouse wheel support for out of browser applications on a computer that is running a Mac operating system.
Issue 6
This update resolves a security issue. Playback of PlayReady-protected content through a remote desktop connection or a terminal session is now disabled.

Issue 7

Fixed various memory leaks including:

Windows 8 with Secure Boot enabled may no longer boot after installing new hardware

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

•You have a certified Windows 8 or Windows RT UEFI-based computer and Secure Boot has been enabled in the computer's BIOS.
•You make changes to the computer's hardware. Examples would include adding a new graphics, networking or storage controller adapter.

In this scenario, Windows may no longer boot after the changes are made. You may encounter behaviors such as hanging at a black screen, Windows crashing with a blue screen, or BIOS error messages to change your settings.



Cause

This behavior may occur when Secure Boot has been enabled in your computer's BIOS. Secure Boot protects the integrity of the operating system and prevents unauthorized firmware, operating systems or UEFI drivers from interfering with the boot process.

Resolution

To work around this issue, Secure Boot must first be disabled before installing new hardware. For more information on disabling Secure Boot in your computer's BIOS, reference the manual that came with your motherboard or contact your motherboard manufacturer. If you’re running Java SE 6, we have some news for you: Oracle stopped providing public updates to it after February 2013.

Enterprise customers will still have access to long term help through their support channels.

Malware exploiting vulnerabilities in Java isn’t new. We’ve written about Java vulnerabilities on this blog before. In fact, since July this year Exploit:Java/CVE-2013-2465 has been making the rounds and targeting Java SE 6.

Oracle has done a great job of releasing Java updates to patch these vulnerabilities.

However, Java SE 6 is about seven years old, and Java SE 7 was released more than two years ago. This means it’s time to think about alternatives for the aging version.

Disk Cleanup Wizard addon lets users delete outdated Windows updates on Windows 7 SP1

Introduction
This article describes an update for the Disk Cleanup wizard in Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

This update adds a new plugin to the Disk Cleanup wizard. After you install this update, you can use the Windows Update Cleanup option to delete Windows updates that you no longer need.

Notes
The Windows Update Cleanup option is available only when the Disk Cleanup wizard detects Windows updates that you do not need on the computer.
To let you roll back to previous updates, updates are stored in the WinSxS store even after they are superseded by later updates. Therefore, after you run the Disk Cleanup wizard, you may be unable to roll back to a superseded update. If you want to roll back to a superseded update that the Disk Cleanup wizard deletes, you can manually install the update.
