100% System Idle Process

Hello! Haven't had an issues in months. Anyways... I have a malware/adware problem I believe. I used spybot search and destory and ad-ware se personal and they didn't find anything. Adware found some tracking cookies and spybot found nothing at all. It's even weirder because microsoft anti-virus is always set to I will monitor it myself because I have symantec and normally when I do a spybot check it pulls up the microsoft anti-virus override. It unforunately, didn't do it this time. I also ran symantec anti-virus and it didn't find anything. I then was like ... well i'll try running housecall just to double check that it isn't something wrong with my computer. I ran it twice today. Once I thought I closed the window which I didn't remember doing. Another one as I went to work and when I came home my entire iexplore was closed. I think it might be related to the problem I'm having. Anyways here are some of the symptoms:

Slow Loading Process of Windows XP
Slow Loading Process of Bootup programs
    Slow Application Processes

It took me 10 minutes to boot windows in which it normally takes a minute at most. Then after logging in it takes another 10 minutes before I can even do anything on the computer. Normally this process takes 30 seconds. I checked my alt, ctl, del as well to see if there were any processes running in the background and I didn't notice anything. At first I thought it all looked normal. But when I reset the computer after a virus scan there were 5 more svhosts than usual, which I know there shouldn't be. Any help would be great because i'm taking a distance learning course as well while I'm away from my college and all the material is online. But I can't watch the videos for the course because my media player lags and every 1 seconds of the clip is played in a 5 second skip. Thanks very much ahead of time.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay here is what I did before this log (Post from another forum that couldn't fix my problem). I cleaned up my startup by going into Run->msconfig and disabling all startup appliances. I then ran hijackThis to remove anything else that might be still here. I tried running disk cleanup but the virus or whatever stops the process and my computer shuts down. In addition to this, I ran spybot search and destroy to make sure there wasn't any issues. It didn't detect anything (which I know is wrong). Here is the reasoning behind how I know it is wrong:

First off, when you turn off microsoft xp's anti-virus protection, it has the little read window in the bottom saying the computer is unprotected. When you run spybot search and destory, it comes up that there is something that is disabling microsoft windows xp antivirus. In this case I think the actual detection hit is microsoft.antivirus.override and it's considered a threat. I have the ballon in the bottom right of my computer. Spybot says there are no threats. Therefore something is in the background manipulating what my programs are finding.

Secondly, I don't have service pack 3 yet for a good reason. There is a lot of issues with Hp/Compaqs that use an AMD processor because of a string of code that messes with the startup for windows XP. It was recommended that all malware be taken off, some toolkits, and other items be disabled before you install SP3 or it'll become an issues. My series of computer is actually on the list from microsoft to disable before it happens.

Anyway, I also ran Adware Se Personal and it did detect 5 items, which were fixed, and other than that nothing. Symantec found nothing. Unforunatelly I can't install AVG because symantec won't let it as it's a second antivirus which is detected as a virus on symantec. What makes matters worse is that I can't uninstall symantec from the computer because it is so slow it doesn't work at all.

In addition to this, I can't use system restore because all the restore points are corrupted and won't restore to those values. My only other option is to reformat but I can't make backup disks because the computer is so slow that it doesn't read/write data properly due to buffer errors (I'm an electrical engineer and it's literally boggling my entire campus on what's wrong). Sooo I decided to swallow the pride and ask for help. Below is an attached hijackthis log of what is on the computer currently.

Yea the hijackthis took 3 minutes to complete in what it normally takes me 10 seconds to do. It's really bad. As you can tell there isn't too much that sticks out on the log but I know it is an issues. In addition to this, my computer is at 100% for the amount of memory that I'm using. I'm not sure what to do and it's driving me nuts haha. I don't know if my original post stated it, but the virus turns off even the mcafee internet explorer browser when I do a scan. It's vicious. Oh and to respond to the safe mode issue, it takes 10 minutes just to boot into safe mode ... not exactly safe. I know it's not a hardware issue though. Anyways this is the guy who has the issue now ... my girlfriend was being ever so sweet and posting for me, but I've gotten some of it undercontrol so I can atleast view websites.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

July 4/08 Update: I ran a disk defrag and everything was degragged properly without errors or warnings. I also deleted some extra files off my computer to improve the amount of space I had. I was able to install AVG and I ran a scan in safe mode (all this was done in safe mode). In addition to this, I did a disk cleanup and it successfully deleted all the files. The AVG scan in safe mode found some problems but they were able to be removed as far as it said.

I've tried a couple of other forums, bleepingcomputer.com and hardwaregeeks.com and they have not been able to diagnosis the problem or where it's coming from. Any help would be grateful as I have very little of my stuff backed up on external devices. Thanks for any help you can give.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions. If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. Make sure that you are not still using MSconfig to control startups. This is mentioned in step 1 of the below.

Sorry, so many websites and so many rules. I apologize. I attached the MGlogs.zip file in this post and I took care of everything else that was written in the prescan. My girlfriend is posting for me because the system is that slow. So once I read the pre-post rules it was too late and it posted the topic. Sorry once again. Here are the logs.

You need to run ALL of the READ & RUN ME and attach all of the logs that are requested. MGtools is the very last thing to be run. You will need to run it again after running the other steps first. Also if you do not put your system into Normal Startup mode with MSconfig which was requested in step 1 of the READ & RUN ME and in my first message, you will have additional delay in getting help.

Ah I'm sorry I misinterpreted the post, I thought it said run "one" scan but I noticed later on after posting it that it said to run all of them, and I'm currently on my third. I'll post it after it's done.

I notice that you now have Symantec uninstalled which you said you could not uninstall. Are things working better now that it is gone?

  7. Seka

    Seka Private E-2

It's getting better gradually, it's still very slow though. It's gotten bettern ow that I've been able to uninstall Symantec, but everything's still lagging. The SpyDoctor program found one piece of adware, too, if it means anything.

Please explain what operations are slow! For example answer the below:
    • Is boot up slow?
    • Is shutdown slow?
    • Is browsing/surfing slow?
    • Is downloading slow?
    • Is running any application?
    • Is it also slow in safe boot mode?
    • Also are any process showing in Task Manager to be using a lot of CPU time?
    • Anything else slow?
When you say lagging are you referring to issues with games you play online?

    SpyDoctor or Spyware Doctor?

  9. Seka

    Seka Private E-2

Is boot up slow? Yes, very slow, it takes approximately seven minutes to get to the sign-in screen, and five minutes to get past it.

Is shutdown slow? Shutdown is relatively slow, approximately five minutes to shut down.

Is browsing/surfing slow? Opening browsers takes approximately three minutes, to open links it takes five, general surfing is slow.

Is downloading slow? Clicking the links to initiate downloads is slow, but the actual internet speed is perfectly fine.

Is running any application? All applications are just as slow as the browsing.

Is it also slow in safe boot mode? Yes, it's slow in safe mode but not as slow.

Also are any process showing in Task Manager to be using a lot of CPU time? No, it all looks normal, but system idle process changes from approximately 35% to ~90% every second, and fluctuates.

Anything else slow? If I were to open iTunes and click one mp3 to play, it would instantaneously play the mp3, but every one second of the song is divided up in a real life five second interval, so one second of the song is skipped through five seconds of time. In addition to this, it is very slow to load but the execution if slightly faster than the loading process.

The lag is related only to the 100% allocation of memory to system idle process.

Yes I was referring to Spyware Doctor.

  10. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Okay but are all of these answers still the same after Symantec has been removed.

The when System Idle drops to 35% something else is momentarily getting CPU time. What is it? And System Idle should normally be sitting at about 99% when you are not clicking or doing anything. Thus what is using the other 10%.

System Idle Process is not a process. It is the idle time your CPU has. Which is why I said above that it shoud normally be 99%. Thus I still have to ask what do you mean by lag since high System Idle Process numbers are what you want.

Why did you install this? It was not in your previous logs and it is not something we asked you to install. Please do not install anything we do not request. If you still have this installed, uninstall it now.

Sorry again. I'm going to try to communicate with my girlfriend better as she isn't remotely close to me and I'm explaining things through the phone haha. I ran SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition or SAS. Not spyware doctor. Also things did get slightly better when I uninstalled symantec but no where close to where it used to be. Loading just got slightly faster. System process is idling at 99 where it should be when I'm not doing anything. There is every once in awhile a 2% inclusion in wmpnetwk.exe NETWORK SERVICE and another 2% is being passed between iexplore.exe and explorer.exe.

Everyone once in awhile though ... iexplore.exe jumps to 50% system usage. But it's every once in awihle, not continual. Attached is the SASlog.txt . Sorry ... scans are taking extraordinarily long.

We cannot go any further until you attach the rest of the requested logs from the READ & RUN ME. You need to attach log from the below (given in the order that they should be run):
    • Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log
    • ComboFix
    • MGtools - this needs to be a new log

  14. Seka

    Seka Private E-2

I'm going to go ahead and update the last couple of logs. there was some communication problems when I ran CF as I ran it without killing all processes. So I ran it twice with the actual way (she said double click and run ... it was really meant to be start->run then input the command). Other than that the symptoms are the same so... Hopefully you guys can figure this out haha. OH CFlog2.txt is the combo-fix.exe with the kill command ... CFlog.txt is the combo-fix.exe without the kill command.

This is more than likely ony when doing something in the browser window. Even just clicking in it or moving it can cause a spike. If Task Manager is on top and you do not do anything with open iexplore processes, you should not see any spikes unless there is something actively running in the browser window. If it is to this forum you should see no change. If however on a site that is running an active-X scripts or flash demos.....etc, then their will be periodic activity.

I have asked multiple times that MSconfig not be used, yet it is still running. Are you having a problem putting the PC into Normal Startup mode? MSconfig should not be used to permanently control startups. It is only for temporary debugging. See step 1 of the READ & RUN ME and the link given for Dealing with Startups. You need to set to normal startup mode and then attach a new log from MGtools. You can get the new log without running MGtools by just doing the below.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.

    Then attach the below log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

Sorry about the normal bootup selection. I thought it was enabled as normal but it was selective boot. Don't know how that happened. Also, I'm able to view the internet at an okay speed once the boot/loading process of each individual application is finished. I attached the new MGTools set that you asked for me to run.

Symptoms have slightly changed from all the scans in process. First, programs once loaded seem to move smoothly from that point. This includes games, applications, and the internet. It still loads extremely long when I first open the application thought. After the initial load is finished, it seems to be better. I'm uninstalling avast right now. Sorry about the late reply, just got off work.

I assume you meant AVG8 based on the 2nd message below.

No! Are you using Add/Remove Programs or AVGs own uninstaller?

If you used Add/Remove Programs, reinstall AVG8 and then try something like the below.

Click Start > All Programs > AVG 8 > Uninstall AVG Anti-Virus for Windows

Is someone really using the Remote Debug feature of Visual Studio? I see the below service.

I removed AVG but I had to do it in safemode using it's uninstalller process. Uhm ... probably should have tried the add/remove programs but atleast it's gone. As far as am I using remote debugging on visual studios 2008 ... not to my knowledge. I mean I have it installed for my classes but I haven't actually been debugging any code or producing any code. Should this be something that is disabled?

    EDIT:

Okay ... I read the website and I do not want Remote Debugging. Since it's a computer program for free for the students ... well .. it installs the entire package. Is there a way to remove it?

  24. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Well you may want to check inside the program to see if there is a correct way to do this. I don't want to break the program on you my forcefully removing the debug driver/service. It does look like it make be stopped anyway.

Attach a new MGlogs.zip file so we can check that all of AVG8 was removed. Has removing it changed any of your problems.

I haven't found a way to uninstall the remote service ... so i'm going to keep looking. I attached the new log. Nothing has improved really since the uninstalling of AVG ...

What is the exact remaining problem at this point? Now that you know that System Idlde Process is not a real process and that it is good for it to be a large number, what symptoms/problems are still occurring.

Since I'm going to assume you are going to say something related to performance, I have a few other minor non-malware tweaks for you to try but soon I may just be sending you off to the Software Forum or just saying your performance may be normal.

Do you use the Ares Chatroom Server? If not, this is another service you should stop and disable.

Uninstall SUPERAntiSpyware now since we are finished with it.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msnmsgr] "C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\msnmsgr.exe" /background
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ares] "C:\Program Files\Ares\Ares.exe" -h

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Okay I'm going to run this all tonight and get it out of the way. But i'll go ahead and give you a list of some issues and problems that I'm having.

Windows boot is now 5 minutes to boot into windows, which was not a previous problem that I was having before on the computer. Windows signin process is approximately now 3 minutes as compared to about a 30 second process.

I'll give an example of various applications that I normally ran perfectly and the symptoms they are having based on each application. Figure the more information the better.

Applications -> Ventrilo ... VOIP based program. Before I could talk back and forth with 40 people at the same time without experiencing any issues. Now, as i'm on vent right now and listening to people .. all the voices are skipping. It seems to be as i'm typing or doing something else in the background they are skipping. This has never been an issue before.

Applications -> Games ... inside the games I used to run where I had no issues, I'm having lag problems. Where the game is skipping, jumping, or lagging. When i say lag, i'm not saying internet lag, but i guess the best way to say it is pixel lag. Specifically two different games, WoW and Ragnarok Online. RO is more videocard based and i'm getting skips in game that I never had. WoW, mostly RAM based is not even able to be run because the computer is that slow.

Applications -> Internet Explorer ... When i try to type in this exact post, the letters come in way after I type them. Like, I'm typing this sentence and it doesn't show up until about 4 seconds later. In addition to this, If i were to scroll on my mouse wheel, it lags a little then scrolls to the whatever position is noted.

Applications -> AIM .... same issue as above. When someone sends me a message ... the makes the noise and skips just like it would on ventrilo like it's having trouble processing the sound, then when I type into AIM it does the internet explorer thing wher ethe information I type comes way after what it normally would.

All these seem to point to hardware issues ... but I've had this computer for a year and I have never encountered any of these issues before. In fact ... I normally ran RO, Ventrilo, msnmgr, aim, iexplorer, itunes, and various other programs at the same time with ease. Now I can't seem to run iexplorer and any other program at the same time without lag. I do have a timeframe that I believe it happened and I don't think my GF posted it which she should have. I was searching for a streamed copy of firefly for out of the US people (Can be viewed on HULU in the US). As I was looking for one, I clicked a website and it redirected me to another website and a popup came up. I instantly closed the website and closed the other one as with IE7 I have never received a popup ... except for this one site. So I ran a spybot search and destroy scan and it said I did not have a single piece of spyware (hence my previous post where I normally always had the Microsoft.Antivirus.override.protection that S&D finds). In addition to this, I previously had a spyware that I could not remove, Zedo, which normally always showed on the scan as well .. but is still not there. I'm not sure if this is any help but I can physically see and notice the changes in the computers overall preformance. It's difficult to describe sorry haha.

EDIT: Also alt-tabbing out of programs seems to increase the amount of problems as well.

Okay but both of these have improved since what you posted in your 1st message said:
I suggest for your apparently slow connection you look into issues with any of the following equipment which you may be using
    • router - power cycle it and also try by passing and using a direct connection from the PC to your cable or DSL modem
    • modem (cable or DSL) - power cycle it
    • speak to your ISP about potential problems with throughput
Other issues sound like problems on your PC.
    • Potentially memory or hard disk problems. You may want to try posting in the Hardware Forum and doing memory and hard disk tests.
    • Possible other software issues or issues with the Windows Registry or with the Windows Operation System files.
      • try running sfc /scannow from the Start, Run box. If it finds problems, it may ask for the Windows CD so have it ready.
None of what I posted in my previous message is going to address the above issues completely but it will not hurt to do them and it will improve boot time and overall performance slightly.

The connection itself is actually quite good. I'm getting up to 300 kb/s on the download ... it's like a physical lag itself that can be observed on the screen. I attached the Combofixlog.txt to this post and am running the MGTools one right now. Yea, the computer itself has been getting faster and faster after each step it seems. Which is why I'm not sure if it's a hardware issue. I mean it's getting quite a bit better. Seems like it's just one step from being perfect haha.

    EDIT:

Also, I don't have a windows XP or a restore disk for this computer. Windows XP came from Texas Tech Campus and it's not a cd but a download.

For some reason it won't let me edit the post. Here is the latest MGTools log. It seems to be running smoother now after that .. but i'm going to run the avast! scan before i call it as good as I can on the malware/spyware/virus or whatever issue there is haha. But everything we have done so far has been making it faster and faster.

EDIT: ITunes Music is still skipping and all speech seems to be skipping like that. Loading is also taking awhile on each program though.

Did you try sfc and did it ask for the CD?

You cannot edit a message after a 5 minute timer expires.

You will have to take this to the Software Forum. We have not been working on any malware issues since the start of this thread. You issues are not due to malware. All I can suggest is that you uninstall this software, reboot, and then reinstall. If we keep on tweaking your system to remove other processes/services, you will soon be complaining of other features that do not work properly anymore.

I still see the below in your startup list:
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msnmsgr] "C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\msnmsgr.exe" /background

Did you decide not to fix it? Why do you want this to load at startup? I also so the below in your running process list when you ran GetLogs.bat:

    C:\Program Files\AIM6\aim6.exe
    C:\Program Files\AIM6\aolsoftware.exe

Why are these running? You were just suppose to run the fixME.reg patch, Ccleaner, and the GetLogs.bat. Why did you run these? And are they running when you had a problem with iTunes?

There is nothing else for us to fix except the below.

    O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgssie.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

And you can delete the below left over folder from Symantec:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
