180 solutions / downloadplus

I'm stumped. My Norton Antivirus keeps picking up a virus....telling me it has cleaned it...but it does not. It is a popup deal called DOWNLOADPLUS...which apparently feeds popup ads into my computer (I haven't noticed that).I have followed the instructions at the symantec site...to no avail. I have downloaded the trojan remover...it did not detect it. When I was taking the line out of the registry, i noticed 180 Solutions - this is one of the things that ADAWARE picks up. My adaware scans, by the way, are picking up between 50 and 70 bugs in various categories. So...something is up. Anyway...any ideas? These do not seem to be e-mail viruses...but related to popup ads. The DOWNLOADPLUS wants me to put my zip code in a pop up box so it can give me a weather report. Weird. Any Ideas? I'm out of em!

 

have you tried Hijackthis and spybot?

 

I did read doxdesk previous to posting...I cannot seem to find an Application Data on my Windows XP system. I even did a search for it!

 

Hiiden file.

Show Hidden Files and Folders and uncheck Hide protected Operating System Files..

My Computer >Tools> Folder Options> View Tab

Thanks, Adrenalyn. Now I can see the Application Data folder...but there was no downloadplus.exe file there.

I ran the hijack thing ... of course I was terrified about removing anything there...I did remove something that looked suspicious ... buthave not rebooted yet to see if that was it.

I am trying your suggestions and I do appreciate all of them!

Halo, thanks. I did run the evaluation version of the Pest Patrol...and it picked up this troublemaker right away...but I have to pay 40 bucks to get rid of it...sheesh...

I haven't tried undoing the restore, running the ad-aware/spybot things...then rebooting and turning it back on. I guess I'll do that next.

 

I will check back later, folks...this has driven me mad and taken most of my day. bah!

CommonName

Uninstall if they're there. Make sure you update Ad-aware and Spybot to the latest reference files! Then run them both and delete whatever they find. After you do all that and reboot, run HijackThis again and post the new logfile here.

Thanks, Alanac...I did everything you said. Here is the most recent hijack this file report. When I restarted the computer this time, the downloadplus did not load (thankfully) ... but the spybot asked me about a couple of things that were trying to load .. I said 'block' ... and all went smoothly.

jed, make sure you did what Halo suggested:

You don't want System Restore to re-install the nasties you've cleaned...

So is Norton still reporting a virus?

Run Spybot and Ad-aware again just to make sure everything's gone but the normal tracking cookies.

I would recommend posting your log file at the SpywareInfo Forum. They've got people there that specialize in reading HJT logs.

Everything seems to be clear...except something new...

Everytime I try to move around on MSN Groups a box from Spybot comes up saying that "Avenue A, Inc." is trying to start up.

Any idea what that is?

Well...after trying all this I am still getting downloadplus ... just can't get rid of it or MsgCenter_lminv1.exe ... common name ... I am guessing that somewhere along the way I am failing to do something that I'm being instructed to do on these sites. I've spent hours trying to do it. Well...you guys know how it goes. You've been so nice to offer so many suggestions.

 

It sounds like System Restore reinstalled the nasties that you had cleaned...

You need to turn off System Restore, reboot, go through the cleaning procedures again as described in this thread (sorry ), make sure you've got it all cleaned, then turn System Restore back on and reboot.

Alan, thanks for your patience. I Re-ran Ad-aware (with the customized settings as suggested on their site) and the spy-blocker. Each suggested that they could not eliminate all of the COMMON NAME files because they were being used ... and that if they could run on re-start, they could eliminate them. I did that...before anything loaded ad-aware ran...found nothing ... then I re-activated system restore...and up popped that damnable downloadplus thing trying to start up (the pest patrol is keeping it from actually starting up).

After I run adaware again, it finds 30something new objects ... and it all starts over.

So I'm confused about getting everything cleaned up ... and then rebooting ... although I went through the motions, it was ineffective.

I am sure the instructions you are providing are accurate... my understanding of the whole deal is proabably not too accurate.

BTW, after a few times of popping up, the downloadplus doesn't come up again...so it's only a bug when I first reboot and then a few more minutes afterward.

Just to be sure I understand...I press f8 when it comes back up into safemode...or...when? Sorry.

 

sorry should have made myself clearer restart your pc then press F8 before you get to the windows loading screen you should then get some options choose safe mode delete the file then restart as normal

 

General, I followed your instructions (thanks for the clarification) ... and ever since I have done so ... there have been no popups, no interruptions, and no sign that the blasted bug is still in my system. I've been surfing the net for a few hours now with no problems. I'll be holding my breath when I start back up again...but...it seems like things are now okie dokie.
