2 computers/ interent is slow

I am trying to share an internet connection with the kids. We have comcast cable connection. I purchased a LinkSys wireless G broadband router. I was told that this would solve my problems. But once again the problem still is happening. The problem...

When ever they get on line and start to download I loose all my bandwidth. Right now while they are not downloading I can get speeds of up to 3000 Kbps, but the minute they start a download I drop down to under 500 Kbps usually.

Is this a hopeless situation? Or is there a way to keep them from taking all the connection?

You probably mean 500KB/sec. (B=Byte) which is a very good download speed.

The big number at the beginning has to do with system adjustment, it is not the actual Download.

However if you really mean 500Kb/sec. (b=bit).

If your problem is Not download but actual surfing you would have to limit your kids Bandwidth read this: Can I Monitor my LAN, control the usage of the Internet, and Network Resources by other computers from my main computer?

 

There's no problem with your connection but what it sounds like what you need is some kind of traffic shaper (something that distributes bandwidth more evenly). Other users probably have a better info about that.

If the kids are using a p2p program then it may be possible to allow/limit how much bandwidth that p2p program uses (through its configuration). Yell at them and tell them who is the boss.
