3d display corruption

  1. I have Halo:Combat Evolved for xp and have been playing it succesfully for almost 6 months now. Recently I upgraded my processor from a 2.0 Ghz to 2.8 which I am positive is compatible with my motherboard/chipset. I also have a ati radeon x1650 pro agp and use a dvi-d cable with an lg 19" display using 75 hertz refresh rate (all completely supportable) My problem though has been I assume since I upgraded my processor that while playing Halo green squares appear and sometimes images are "streched" endlessly on the screen. I changed the display settings to the BARE MINIMUM and this still occurred. I ran dxdiag and found that direct3d 7 acceleration worked fine, but 8 and 9 both had the square-static looking corruption. Most of my research into this problem has ran into a dead end, and my gpu is only 6 months old. Any suggestions?

btw: all drivers including catalyst and dx are up to date and i have sp2 and pretty much anything you can think of is the newest version.

btw2: I also get green squares when i play dvds, or most videos for that matter.

lastbtw: if i change all of the catalyst settings to the minimum and lower the graphics acceleration tab under display properties, the problem persists.....bummer huh?

Its a long shot but check your media player options, if there is a setting that says hardware acceleration untick this. I know it sounds strange but I had this turned on in winamp for my 7900gtx and i was getting pink and black squares in games and video playback. Turned it off and it was fine, not sure why winamp would inteffer (spelling) with games but there you go.

Otherwise it might be worth testing with another gfx card if possible as it is possible the gpu is going even after only 6 months. This will eliminate either the card or the cpu.

I would wager the PSU might warrant a look

  4. I tried the hardware acceleration thing in windows media player and although it was a mitigating factor, it did not solve the problem, especially in games and other 3d apps. Meithed, why do you think the psu could be the problem?

because if your video card is not getting enough juice, it will cause video corruption. Since the problems started after you swapped out your old single core with a dual core (takes more power).. it is at least worth a look. What are the model and specs on your psu?

  6. well i did swap out my single core, but it was just with a faster single core, to set the record straight, but it might still draw more juice than before, which would make sense I suppose. the psu is the same one that came with this old compaq d510 cmt...which might be my problem, any suggestions on what model I might replace it with?
