A duplicate name exists on the network

So I bought my new laptop yesterday. But when I boot up the computer after the welcome screen pops up and before the desktop is displayed, I get an error message that says "a duplicate name exists on the network." So far I've only been able to try connecting to my schools network. It doesn't affect anything...it's just annoying. Anyone ever have this problem before?

I'm running windows xp sp2.

Hey, I have this problem but haven't figured it out. I've had my hp Pavillion for a year and a half or so and today had to reload/reformat because of malware. Now it tells me there is a duplicate name which I assume is because it recognizes my reformatted computer as a separate computer? How can I fix this?

Do you loginto a domain or is it just a workgroup computer?

 

I don't know, how do I find out? I'm also concerned about security since I'm not encrypted.

 

I don't know about the duplicate name on the network error but what is your concern about security? Are you connected via wireless? If you aren't encrypted. Why Not?
