Accessing blocked sites (legitimate ones)

    Hey guys,

I go to a residential highschool and recently they installed a filter. Apparently some kids can't stop using TorrentSpy and/or looking at porn all the time.

Trouble is, they aren't going to "take our requests" for taking sites off the black list until next week. I have no way to access LEGITIMATE websites like my personal email (gmail) or Livejournal.com and purevolume.com. Funny they would block a LEGAL way of getting music.

Anyhow, all of the proxy sites I once knew of don't work anymore (Atunnel.com, firewalldown.com, etc.) and I even found a thing on Google to use the translator as a proxy so that you type in http://www.google.com/translate?langpair=en|en&u=www.gmail.com to access gmail. Didn't work.

I get a big ugly red screen saying

    Access to the page:

    http://mail.google.com/mail/

... has been denied for the following reason:

    Banned site: mail.google.com

You are seeing this error because what you attempted to access appears to contain, or is labeled as containing, material that has been deemed inappropriate.

If you have any queries contact your Network Manager.

Anyone know anything about DansGuardian or how to get around it? This is stupid because I'm trying to check my personal email for college application stuff and I enjoy downloading LEGAL music. What can I do?

Argh!!! Yahoo mail and Hotmail are also blocked. This is tyranny!!!!!!!!

This supposedly is in effect because the state dept. of education is blocking these sites for kids in a regular school... AKA they don't LIVE at school. My school is residential, but doesn't require tuition. So it's public and has to follow these same rules... Or atleast that is what I'm being told. Lies!

Well maybe thats why they have blocked access to sites cause they dont want malware or smut on their pc's.

Cant you just wait till next week to be able to browse those sites again?

We cant help you override secuirty settings your school has placed as this would be considered hacking. Isnt there another place you could use a pc and not be restricted by the filter?

No there isn't a place. And 2, I actually use my personal email (gmail) and several communities on LiveJournal to learn about universities I plan on attending. Is that good enough? Heh.

I feel like I live in China.

It is their network, not your's. Now get back to homework, and quit looking/browsing for what you should not be.

I've done my homework and therefore I know that the correct spelling is yours, not your's, and in your sentence the word was neither possessive nor a contraction and did not need the apostrophe. You do your homework!

Also, another thing I might add: it's a public school (as I said) and therefore my own taxes help pay for the school and the network that it encompasses. So no, it's not entirely theirs. :)

I get the point that it "could be" wrong and so no one will help me, so I'll stop. Thanks though! :D

You know how it is with kids these days. What ever happened to going to school and it was a privilege to use a computer. The Internet was not even around, and you actually had to be chosen to attend computer classes.

Well its a network that he doesnt have access to and if the school chooses to block certain sites then be it. He cant do anything about it, thats the end of the problem there.

Yeah, unlike a lot of lazy ass highschool kids, I've had jobs. Not at the moment, because I'm taking university classes and I'm 70 miles from my home. Next year in college, maybe. My point is that legally I can look at porn, but they won't even allow me to check my Gmail. I'm not a 13 year-old trying to do a Google image search for boobs. :p

If there is one thing you will learn in your life, it ain't fair. Accept the things you can't change, work toward changing those things that you can ...which is usually confined to your own self.:)
