I NEED HELP! Hello, Is there anybody in there? I have an Acer Aspire 5100 and I can't get it to do SQUAT!
    I'm getting this prompt:

missing file or corrupt. <windows root>\system32\hal.dll

What the heck does that MEAN? Can anyone help me and if you can are you willing to help me? Desperately seeking driver. :cry
I don't have start up discs because they didn't come with the computer when we bought it.

    Have you tried check disk?
    # Open "My Computer" and right-click on the icon for the drive that is to be checked.
In the context menu that opens, choose "Properties".
Click the "Tools" tab at the top of the Properties window.
In the "Error-checking" section, click the button "Check now".
A box showing the options for running Chkdsk is then available
Normally a box will appear with options to "automatically repair"

This is the place for all your drivers.

Thanks for your suggestion but part of the problem is that I can't even get the computer to boot up to the point you mention. It's as if the problem will not allow the computer to get past the prompt in question. The computer is Windows vista "capable" but the only vista cd I have belongs to a Toshiba...not an Acer.

Yeah... hal.dll errors can be nightmarish and are rarely easily fixable without data loss. I have run into hal.dll errors on drives that have been quick formatted vs. full-formatted, or when there is some type of serious file system error. Microsoft supplies this info:

But it requires an XP boot disc. You can create XP boot floppies, but since it's a laptop, you don't have a floppy drive. You can go through the steps of trying to combine the 6 floppies in to a single ISO image file to burn to a CD, but that is really a big-time PITA. There's a boot CD that has 'chkdsk' built in to it, and I believe it also has a command prompt. Try this: http://www.livecd.com They have a free demo version with some of the functions disabled, but I think the chkdsk and command prompt will work. You can also try the UBCD4Win http://majorgeeks.com/UBCD4Win_d5710.html The how-to-build guide is here http://www.ubcd4win.com/howto.htm It has a tons of built-in programs and I'm hoping something there will work.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my ?. I will try these options and see if I can find a solution. By the way, I am a HUGE Calvin and Hobbes fan. Before my son was even conceived I prayed for a child just like Calvin and got exactly what I had asked for. His name is Zachary but he is definately all Calvin.:cool
