Adobe Reader 9 blocking Adobe Acrobat 5

Is it possible to bypass Reader 9 to enable me to regain access to an early version of Acrobat?

I have used Acrobat 5 for Word to PDF conversions for years and am very happy with it but it will not open some PDF files so I downloaded the latest version of Adobe Reader, V9. It enables me to open any PDF but will not allow me open a PDF in Acrobat so I can use Acrobat's tools and facilites.

Am I snookered? Is this a ploy to force me to upgrade my version of Acrobat?
