ADSL Disconnection has frozen my Laptop

    Used new ADSL account/modem/connections for the first time today on the LapTop and the connection was disrupted when the phone cable was unplugged from the wall's phone port.

    Now, the Laptop won't shut down (it's XP), it won't restart, it's completely frozen.

    What has happened?

    How does one disconnect the ADSL equipment without freezing one's Laptop in the future?

    I'm using the ADSL equipment on the PC at the moment and don't want the same to happen to it.
