Ok, had lots of problems since we installed ntl netguard following signing up to brodband. After alot of messing i managed to eradicate the netguard from the system and all seemed to be well for about a day. I was then informed by someone else that the computer had been messed with somehow and something opened msdos, a load of dodgy stuff appeared on the computer which i have deleted to a point where i can actually get on the net now without the computer dying. However, i cannot hit links, and so can't provide my system info from the link download, being a computer dunce all i know is that we have 350 meg of ram if that helps.

I cant seem to make an attatchment either, i assume it's the paper clip, the screen freezes when i try, it seems everything i try to do to help my system benign or otherwise becomes an impossability. I will try to post the hijack log info, if not any info on how i could get it to someone to have a look at would be great, in fact any help at all would be marvellous as i'm about an inch away from dismantling my computer with a well known pc tool, the steel toe capped boot and buying a new one which i really cant afford. Also, the virus/registry/spyware software has picked stugff up and removed without really doing anything to remedy the situation. Internet is slow, pc freezes, and generally i can't do a great deal with it. Thanks.

-After the screen disappearing for the sixth time while trying to make the attatchment of the hijack logfile i just don't know what else to do, can anyone advise please?

    *Begins rocking back and forth*

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

I'm not sure if you are having malware problems or other problems. Please try to run as much of the below as possible. It is in your best interest to try and run all of it. Attach the logs requested if you can. If you cannot attach them, then post them in line with your message and I will attach them.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:

      • [*]runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
        [*]newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

Thanks for that, but after a good three solid days, i've managed to sort it just about.

Managed to sort the Malware log myself with the help of some site or another, virus software and firewall are up, and i solved my remaining internet problems by installing Mozilla Firefox (which i would recommend to anyone very highly) as i had a feeling IE was knackered, which it was, but i couldn't re-install it from a number of places for a number of reasons.

There are still a few issues, however i reckon if i can find a Windows disk (shouldn't be a problem), i can use a program i found to repair corrupt and missing files which i think should resolve the remaining niggles i have. I can't update from microsoft as apparently our version of windows isn't authentic, which it is, but never mind, i think i can sort it.

Spyware Doctor found 150 odd problems which none of the others did, which have been wiped, and compared to a few days ago the computer is now positively angelic, i await it's next wobbler which i don't doubt will throw itself sooner or later.

I've learnt alot about computers in the last few days (comparitively speaking) Thankyou and all that, but i don't seem to have the problems anymore and can move about the internet and press links and stuff at will, it's bliss.

Any pointers you might have, or handy software i may not be aware of would be welcome, particularly a windows diagnostic tool that will actually fix problems rather than just tell me i have lots, which incidentally i don't trust at all, i think they just throw up an exagerated amount of errors so you'll buy thier stuff.

Btw, i wouldn't recommend to anyone to do some of the things that i did to fix this computer as half the time i didn't know what i was playing at, and i could quite easily have killed my system thinking about it. If i could have performed the simplest of tasks with it, i would surely have left it to one of these guys to direct me.

Basically i had, IE problems, Windows problems (will still have a few) and lots of nasty spyware problems which just made the computer nigh on impossible to use.

What we recommend is in another sticky thread:

How to Protect yourself from malware!

By the way, you need IE or you cannot get all updates from Microsoft. They will not allow you to use another browser to get all updates. Some updates may work but not all and you may not be able to authenticate you Windows OS is you use another browser.
