I have Windows XP, and everytime I boot my comp and log into my name (only occurs in my account), I get a bunch of pop-up windows about the usual adult sites etc. They seem to generate from http://newt1.adultworld.com before loading the actual popup site. I also noticed that there is a little grey box (less than 1cm) on the top left side of my desktop, and if I run my mouse over it, it turns into a busy pointer and I can't click it. Alt+Tab shows it as unknown. Task Manager says that there is a program called "programs" is running, and the icon is of the microsoft office puzzle, but its distorted a bit. Anyway after 5 minutes the program closes itself down, and as it does so, a bunch of errors come up (this also happens if I close down "programs" through task manager. These are the errors I'm getting...

    Programs:
This action cannot be completed because the other application is busy. Choose "switch to" to activate the busy application and correct the problem. (with options of "switch to.." "retry" and "cancel" -but cancel is disabled)

    Programs:
    Run-time error '401':
Can't show non-modal form when modal form is displayed.
    (ok)

    Error:
A Runtime Error has occured. Do you wish to Debug?
    Line: 16
    Error: Object required

    Error:
A Runtime Error has occured. Do you wish to Debug?
    Line: 70
    Error: Object expected

    Error:
A Runtime Error has occured. Do you wish to Debug?
    Line: 243
    Error: '_gat' is undefined.

I thought the problem was from a program I found installed called "give4free", so I unistalled that, but the problem is still there. Both AVG and Spybot hasn't detected any problems, and I've even tried scanning while "programs" is opened, but because the program shuts itself down so quickly, I can't seem to pick it up.

So can anyone shed some light to what the problem might be, or what's causing it, and most importantly....how can I stop it???

    Thanks.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please try logging into safe mode to do the below, or any user profile that has Admin privileges.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can running steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

    Hey, Thanks for the tutorials!!

I ran Super, Spybot, Malwarebytes and MGtools and finally.....my adware problem has been fixed!!! Now I haven't run ComboFix yet and I'm a bit reluctant to...it seems like a heavy program (with using the windows recovery console etc) and I'm only a novice when it comes to this sort of stuff. The logs of the scans are attached, and you can see that there did seem to be some trojans/virus on my comp, so should I run ComboFix just to make sure everythings ok, otherwise my comp is running great and rescanning shows that there are no probs at the moment. Let me know if there's anything else I need to do.

Thanks a million again, I really appreciate it!!
    Tara

    Looks like you are clean, but there are still a few things to clean up;

Run this: Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    Use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

You also should not allow all users to have admin privileges.

    Now reboot and install:
    Java Runtime 6

Part of your problem is lack of ram
    Code:
    Total Physical Memory 512.00 MB
    Available Physical Memory 124.53 MB

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)

    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
