AGP 4X or 8X ever compatible with AGP 2X slot?

I'd like to get a more powerful graphics card, but my MOBO slot is only for 2X cards. Are more powerful cards ever compatible?

Well, The other cards should be perfectly compatible, but they won't run at there full potential. It's kinda like trying to drive a Ferrari down a public road, the car can only go as fast as the road can handle. Bit of a weird example but I think that explains it pretty simply

 

I understand- even tho I don't drive! I thought there was a problem with voltage differences in some cases, not that that means much to me.

 

Hmmm, As far as I can remember the 2 should both work together. Maybe contact the manufacture of the card you're thinking of purchasing first to double check just in case.

 

It should but you might want to upgrade your motherboard to one that has a 4x or 8x agp slot.

 

It really depends on the card and motherboard.

If the card is backward compatible (most are), then it should be OK.


Some earlier model motherboards had problems with the voltage that could fry a card, so you need to check.

 

It's 6 years old (Giga-byte GA-71XE4). The manual just mentions AGP 2X. Not sure if I fancy a fry-up

 

It might work if the listed bus speed for the video card includes 2x agp, some ati cards do.
After checking google i found out the the radeon 9700 with work with 2x agp http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,476251,00.asp.
