AGP, PCI... what's a girl to do?

Hey all. I've got a simple question, but I lack the brains to figure it out by myself...

Here it is:: my mother has three PCI slots (32-bit PCI 2.2 expansion slots that support cards like LAN or SCSI) AND one AGP 4X slot.

An AGP 4X is the right one? This is confussing... what are the PCI slots for?

AGP is for AGP type Video/Graphics card, you said 4x, most 8x AGP cards are backwards compatitable.
PCI, there are some PCI video cards not much good for gaming, most PC's in the PCI slot you'll find sound cards, eithernet/lan, usb, firewire stuff like that.
Modern PC's have a PCI-E slot, thats used for modern graphics cards.

What exactly are you wanting to do, or what type of hardware ya wanting to add?

 

The Video you would want to use is AGP. The 3 PCI slots on the board would be used for any other controllers except PCI-Express. Things like a modem, Network Card, SCSI controller, additional USB Controller, Additional Parallel port, etc.

A PCI video card would be a downgrade from the AGP where a PCI-Express would be an upgrade but it sounds like you don't have a PCI-Express slot.

The PCI 2.2 expansion slot is for a specific device, usually a special SCSI controller or a Gigabit Network Controller.
