All downloads hang

My kids have been on my computer and now, whenever I try to download something (via an http link through IE or Firefox), it hangs at any download greater than about 1 MB. It's not an issue with very small files, but anything of any significant size, and the download will not complete. I don't get any error messages, but the download window just stays stuck at a percentage. It's not locked up or anything. The file transfer graphics are going as usual but the download speed, percentage, etc is not showing any progression. I've run all my anti-virus anti-malware and nothing has changed. I have no trouble downloading those large files when I boot into safe mode. I have WinXP SP2 running on a Dell XPS 400 Pentium D 300GHz, 2GB RAM, Motorola Cable Modem with d-Link DIR-625 router. As I said it happens with IE and Firefox and only on this computer. Let me know what other info you need. Thanks

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, renaming, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy. - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

    CClean didn't find anything.
Counterspy found some things but I accidentally had it remove them instead of quarantining them. I still can't download when booting normally.
Bitdefender and Pandascan wouldn't run (probably because they to download something to my computer and that is the problem I'm having in the first place).

I'm attaching the runkeys, newfiles and HijackThis logs. Thanks.

It is not a malware scanner so there is nothing for it to find. It is just a disk cleaner. ;)

That's fine but you were still supposed to attach a log.

Your problems with downloading do not appear to be related to malware from what I can see however let's fix what I found and go from there.

First uninstall Viewpoint Media Player as requested in step 0 of the READ ME.

Now uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\jusched.exe"
    O4 - Global Startup: AutorunsDisabled
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winvli32 - winvli32.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    Now reboot in normal mode

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.
    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Thanks for all the help thus far. I couldn't install the current version of Sun Java because I can't download it (my current problem of course). I did everything you said but I still can download. I'm attaching the logs you asked for. Thanks.

Okay your logs still clean. As I previously indicated, your problems are not due to malware.
I would suggest you shutoff the power to your cable modem and to your router for about 10 seconds and then turn the cable mode back on and wait for it to stablize (a couple minutes) and then turn on your router.

If this does not help, I would suggest you borrow another PC to help you determine if the problem is your PC or the connection from the cable company.

I already have tried turning off and restarting my cable modem and router and it doesn't change anything. I know it is just with this computer because I can download from all the other computers (wired and wireless) linked to my router. It is something with this computer.

Then I suggest you try looking into possible hardware issues or possibly some kind of software conflict. Those should be addressed in the Hardware or Software Forums respectively.

One thing I forgot to mention in the area of possible software conflict is that you should try uninstalling or disabling various software items (especially firewall, antivirus,...etc). Since you said safe mode was okay, there are many things that would not load in safe mode but do load in normal mode. This may help you locate the problem.

Thanks. I'll try one of the other forums. Thanks again.

You're welcome but did you look into what I posted in message # 9 as it could help you isolate the problem?
