All .exe Extension corrupted

This isn't my computer, but I'm going to quote the person.

Don't know what happend. I told someone to shut down the computer, and instead of going to Start/Shutdown, she pushed the button on the computer for 5 seconds. So I turn it on today, and it's screwed. Restarting doesn't work... and it seems to make it worse..

Everything with .exe as the extension isn't working. The icons for them are gone too, and are replaced by a symbol. (which represents that you need to choose a program to run it.)
I think some .ink files isn't working either

Basically, the .exe extension isn't working on all the programs. I have no idea. Any help?

-It's Windows XP.
- redownloading doesn't work, so it's the system.

Go to the link below and use the EXE File Association Fix (Restore default association for EXE files), it's the 8th one down.

Thanks Matacumbie. Unfortunatly it seems that after downloading, the .reg for that file doesn't open correctly, and is giving the option to open with whichever program, like the .exe file. This is after I extracted the file, so it's .reg.
