I am after a Registry hack, or whatever, so I can alter the sort sequence in my C:\Downloads folder
    from..........................
Sub-Folders in Alphabetical sequence, followed by Files in Alpha sequence
    to.............................
Straight descending Time within Date sequence, in my "Date Modified" column, as the new default.

I have previously added "Date Modified" column.
Most users will only have a "Date Created" column. I like both, as well as "Comments" that I find extremely useful.

Go inside the main folder to where the sub folders are stored.

Right click inside the folder and choose Arrange icons by > Date modified

The default setting is by name.

Thanks BirdBath,;) but I don't quite understand.
The folder I am trying to sort is C:\Downloads.
Where do I click to find "Arrange Icons by"?
Do I open up C:\Downloads, or do I click on Downloads folder in Explorer?
I can't find that right click option. confused Bazza

    Sorry Bazza.

    Go to and open C:\Downloads.

Once inside C:\Downloads you will see all your sub-folders.

Right click on an open area inside the C:\Downloads folder, not on any of your sub-folder icons.

The new right click menu comes up. Go to Arrange icons by > Date modified.

This should arrange the sub folder icons by the content inside.

There, now it's clear as mud. ;)

Thanks BirdBath, but that didn't work for me and it also didn't stick.confused
I tried it in C:\Downloads and also C:\Downloads\2006 more than once. :cry
I was able to select "Modified" in both folders but it still wouldn't work for me.confused

XP Pro, SP2 and updates. Bazza

PS: selecting Modified does not stick.
When you select modified it sorts to Folders, then files, in ascending order.

I am trying to sort files to descending date /time order.
I guess it is not possible. Not a biggie, and I will stick to clicking with the mouse to get to the order I want, if no-one can come up with a solution. Baz

Anyone know whereabouts in the Registry that the default sort sequence for Folders might be stored? Or offer any suggeastions where I could search the Registry? Bazza

No help with registry but, do you happen to have "Show in Groups" checked? If so try unchecking then sort by modified then recheck Show in Groups.

    Thanks plastidust. :major
"Show in Groups" was always unchecked.
So, as you suggested, I sorted files to desired sequence and then checked "Show in Groups". It worked, but if only I could get the option to "stick" and become the default.

Closing my C:\downloads folder loses my selection and it is back to Alpha within Folders, then Files. :cry :( :p

PS: Never ever tried "Show in Groups" before. We learn through MG.;) Baz
