do you have firewall? if so check to see if accidently its not blocking Antivir from updating, if you see an entry in the programs list delete it and try updating Antivir again, also disable your firewall to test the updating.

another option is to manually install the virus def file http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=650319&postcount=360

as it could well be Antivir's website issue.

thanks darlin. i'm confused (as usual) as to how 'it' knew there were files to update if it couldn't connect? if there is a simple way of explaining that, do tell. (or was the creature that lives in the puter just having an off day lol :) )

Dont know how Antivir do their updates but guessing the software will scan for updates register their is an update, but to download the updates it has to get them from another part of the site!

Ad-Aware is similar, it will say their is an update, then when you click ok to install it then says "contacting update site"

When you update they just match your Program File, Scan Engine File, VDF-File, and AVREP.dll files to the ones on the server.

If there is a download there will be a prompt window to download the file or not. If there is no download the internet update screen should close automatically.

    Hope this answers your question.

Just a fyi that Antivir have been working on optimizing their updating process (for a while now), so in the meantime users may experience slowness or no connection.

still having problems. now i cant even get the first stage where they check to see if you need an update. I've checked zone alarm, and have put checks on antivir, but halo you said delete them? did you mean remove it from the list on zone alarm. do i also have a windows firewall? (xp..automatically updated) or is that disabled by zonealarm? (i vaguely recall something saying that). why isn't anybody else having a problem if the fault lies with antivir? aloha as always

Sometimes if a firewall is acting up and a software application that needs access to the net cannot connect its a quick first step to try, delete the listings for said software from the firewall and then try updating/connecting again, your firewall will alert you again to the software wanting to access then net you check Remember and click Always Allow.

elbiatcho1's post below would explain loss of connection to the updates

(sounds like they're under heavy load, although it's strange they have an official release notice yesterday when the new version was last week)
    http://www.free-av.com/

Release change on 13. September 2005-09-19

Dear Users of the AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic,

The new program version 6.32 is available for the download under www.free-av.de (Classic/Freeware) and under www.antivir-pe.de (Premium) since the 13. September 2005.

The regular update of the program is necessary for your security which means an increased load of the download server. Despite our permanent efforts to optimize the technical possibilities, a delay in the download can arise.

You can help us to reduce the data appearance on the servers:

Start the download at times in which less access to the server is taken place (late evening, night, and early morning)....

Guess not many using Antivir? ( I use a Avast and McAfee Pro, so cannot test for you from here )

elbiatcho1 cheers for the update... Laurie guess your next best option is to try and update at a early morning time?
