AntiVirus scanner only software?

I'm using Avast right now, but I don't like the fact you can't completely turn it off, as I'm kind of using this PC to do audio recording till I can get a standalone. I also tried Kaspersky's online scanner, but it takes forever.

Is there anything that will act as an on demand scanner, and then just go away when it finishes?

 

Avira's AntiVir is easy to enable/disable, and provides great protection when enabled. There's plenty of 'scan only' programs that have excellent detection and removal abilities:
Clam AV and ClamWin and Portable ClamWin (all are free and based on the GPL/open source Clam engine)
Dr.Web Cure-IT
Norman Malware Cleaner
RemoveIT-Pro
... and that's just for starters. Many of the paid programs have excellent free on-demand scanners (like MalwareBytes and SUPER Antispyware)

Darg, doesn't it figure, after I downloaded AntiVir and go off googling to find out how to uninstall Avast, I come across how to fully kill Avast. Well I'll try AntiVir on the other computer anyhow.
