    After I returned my Mobo as the fans had bust (fan controller), I got a re-conditioned one to replace it and while waiting I got myself some Arctic Silver 5 to improve my slightly elevated idle temps I was having on my old board (46C solid). So when I get my computer home (in bits) I put it all back together & dusted all the parts as I put them back in & applied a nice thin coat of Arctic Silver 5 & replaced to the CPU cooler, but when I turn it on I see my idle temp sits at around 50C :confused

    So the difference between generic AKASA TIM & Arctic Silver 5 is more heat, I was thinking maybe the AS5 was bad, maybe laying around for too long & separated, what do you guys think?

    My current CPU cooler is the AKASA Revo AK-925: http://www.akasa.co.uk/akasa_english/spec_page/coolers/spec_ak_925.htm

    The programs I use to get my CPU temps are:

    * AUSUS PC Probe II
    * Everest Ultimate Edition
    * Core Temp 0.99.4

    The 46C & 50+C were from PC Probe II so I got Everest Ultimate & Core Temp to see if there was a difference, getting them got me very confused. Basically with PC Probe II you get 1 temp but with Everest Ultimate you get all the cores 1-4 & a "CPU reading, I assume that means all the separate core & the cpu surface temp?

    Take my current temp for example:

    Everest Ultimate Edition:

    CPU: 53C
    CPU#1/Core#1: 44C
    CPU#2/Core#2: 44C
    CPU#3/Core#3: 44C
    CPU#4/Core#4: 44C

    Core Temp 0.99.4:

    CPU#0: 44C

    PC Probe II:

    CPU: 53C

    I guess my question is which temp do I believe, over 50C is bad for the CPU right? AMD Phenom X4 9750 2.4GHz max temp 63C.

    If I need a new cooler I have seen 2 I like the look of:

    *Coolermaster Hyper TX2: http://www.falconcomputers.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=30_125&products_id=3554

    http://www.coolermaster.com/products/product.php?act=detail&id=2535

    *OCZ Vanquisher CPU Cooler: http://www.falconcomputers.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=30_125&products_id=3374

    http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/cooling_products/ocz_vanquisher_cpu_cooler

    As you can see I have a small budget atm but if it isn't urgent I can save more money & get a much better cooler like this:

    *Zalman CNPS9700-LED:http://www.computerorbit.co.uk/item...esc=ZALMAN~ULTRA~QUIET~CPU~COOLER~AMD/P4.html

    I will be returning my mobo to get another soon as dual channel does not work, but this heat issue is really strange :confused

    Edit timer has elapsed :-D

    I read a review of the AKASA Nero tested on an Intel i7 & I think if the i7 is well cooled with it my Phenom 9750 should be sorted, take a look at the review:

    Final thoughts if you don't wanna read all of it :-D: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cooling/2009/02/19/ga-1366-cpu-cooler-group-test/9

    Here it is: http://www.akasa.co.uk/akasa_english/spec_page/coolers/spec_ak_967.htm

    I can get it for £26.81, which is a little more than I wanted to pay but if it works thats one less problem for me right :cool

    Looks like a winner but do I need it, are my temps that bad? Bearing in mind they are idle temp & I play heavy load games.

    to 2-bit
    I am running two identical machines(IBM 8090s with P4 2.8GHz HT CPUs).
    Folding on both 24/7 for Team Major Geeks.
    SpeedFan, Everest, and HWMonitor shows that the CPU in both are solid at 147F(64C), which is still below the rated thermal limit for the processors.
    Your 50C should be OK.

    AS5 needs Burn in. Also needs proper install....
    Separation?? could be an issue

    I prefer Artic Ceramic, no burn in, lasts longer, non conductive, easier clean up too....

    Never tried the ceramic.
    Is it any cooler or about the same?

    @ASUS I knew it would need time to burn in but I didn't think it would be worse to start off with =S 46C-50+C is too high in my opinion thats only the idle temp bearing in mind.

    @hrlow2 It is both the AKASA Revo & the stock AMD CPU HS&F, they both show 50+C

    I wish I had your problem
    50C = about 120F. Mine is running at 58C right now with the folding put on hold.
    Will easily see 65C-67C while folding.

    So 50C is ok for AMD Phenom x4's? I have been told that 50C and up can shorten a CPU's overall life, but tbf I don't tend to have CPU's very long. I bought my AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3.0GHz in July 08 and replaced it with this Phenom 9750 2.4GHz in December :-D

    I guess I am just frustrated that I buy an expensive TIM like Arctic Silver 5, well expensive compared to the usual free LOL

    Just obtained a tube of the Arctic Silver Ceramique paste. Applied it to one of my twin machines.
    Verdict is FOR the Ceramique. 9F-15F cooler while under load even before fully cured.

    I seem to have ended my temperature woes with a new cooler, I decided to go all out and get the Zalman CNPS9700 LED: http://www.zalman.co.kr/ENG/product/Product_Read.asp?idx=164

    Although I still think I have bad AS 5 as I am getting temps in the mid 40C's but with the Zalman ZM-STG1 TIM I was getting high 30's low 40's idle :confused

    I know the Zalman TIM is really good but better than AS 5? If I am lucky after the 200 hour settling period the AC 5 might get me the same results as the Zalman TIM tbf
