My Asus SonicMaster notebook pc model X540S suddenly has white washed out display. It had set for about a month waiting for a new power supply. I plugged it in and now the display is washed out to the point where it is unusable. I don't have a clue. If anybody can shed some light or even a starting point, I would be grateful.

There is a "toggle" that may work. Press Left Alt + Left Shift + PrtScr then Enter to place it in High Contrast mode and see if that helps. You can then switch back with the same key combination.
