Hi! I have the same issue on a friend's laptop that I am trying to fix. I downloaded Speedfan to my laptop first to see how it works. I have an Acer...it does give me heat readings but I have no control with the program. Cannot customize or even see the fan? Not sure what I missed here....direction please? Thank you!:cry

Hi! Thanks for the suggestions! I am a PC Specialist, retired, and did just what you have mentioned. Asus sent me an email for a bios update....the one installed is newer than what they sent. Good job guys! Removed heat sink and removed thermal paste w 99% Isopropyl alcohol and coffee filters. Cleaned the top of the cpu as well as heatsink. Applied new thin layer of thermal paste and all was good for a while. Same thing now..overheating. I have ordered a new fan for the system and have plenty of thermal paste (WHY do they call it paste? It doesn't paste anything! lol). I prefer thermal compound. I know it needs to burn in but I have an impatient client! Go figure! Hopefully on the right track...appreciate your input...would like any further ideas! Thank you!:wave

Welcome to the forum:) Could you give a brief description of the exact problem your having, including all the symptoms, post the temperatures under load and at idle and post your fan speeds under load and at idle.

There is a very simple way to test fans, simply connect it to a 12v source this is what I would do first, I use a dedicated PSU and controller but a simple way is to put two pins into the fan connector then touch them to a 9v battery, the fan should spin up at about 80% power.

Getting speedfan to control the cpu fan can be quite a complex process if it doesn't work out of the box, I recommend this tutorial though if you wish to try it.

I have never had to use this as a permanent cooling fix and would recommend it only for diagnostic or experimentation but each to his own...

Thermal paste doesn't need to burn in, temperatures may go down slightly just a couple of degrees C after a year or so but they should always be well within safe limits the moment it's installed, TIM companies like to use this excuse when their product performs badly in a test.

Thank you for your help! I will try what you have posted. I have the software installed on the Asus and will try to take a shapshot and post it so you can see it. Will post temps but the fan software I downloaded shows flames on all processors...main processor is an Intel i3. Will run the tutorial to see if it helps with the configuration! Appreciate that post most assuredly! Will keep you posted, and, thanks again! :confused

Well, that didn't work! :-o Tried to attach a picture file and can't. I ran the tutorial you posted (TY) but I do NOT see any links to any fans! One fan shows up on the left side of speed fan and is at 0 RPM. Hotter than heck! I'm thinking the fan has failed completely now. Every temp is climbing to 200° F (except the HDD). Cannot select fan to adjust speed. Lost as a goose in the fog. Waiting on a new fan and guess I will have to go from there. :cry
