 I'm getting a message on start up sec master drive ATAPI incompatible and I also get S.M.A.R.T. capable but disabled.

I've lost the CD rom driver and the d drive all together. I have windows2000 and it's worked fine up until now. I even fixed once and the problem started up again. I've tried the paperclip thing to get my cd out of the cd rom but she's a no workie! How do I find out what is incompatible with ATAPI? All help appreciated. Thanks so much, Tina.

Try setting the BIOS to failsafe or factory defaults. As for paperclip, I've never seen it fail. Keep trying!
    Cheers,
    Bob

Hi, thanks for answering. Pardon my ignorance but is this the BIOS? (see below) If so, what do I do with it? If not, how do I get into the bios? I copy and pasted from a window that opened up when I did a search for Bios. I opened this one but theres a lot of files there and I don't which one is the right one. If you scroll down far enough, you'll see the word "Bad" in several places which tells me that something is definitely wrong. How or should I change it? I really appreciate your help. Tina:)

    Hi Tina,

The BIOS is a pre-Windows area. What you have pasted is a Windows system file which would live and operate within Windows and tell the computer how to detect various hardware types.

I have an old Compaq. When I start it up, I see a Compaq splash screen for a moment, some text and then the Windows splash screens. Ditto for Dell, HP, IBM, etc.: you see a branded splash screen. The text, often at the bottom of the splash, will tell you which key to press, at that instant, to get into the BIOS. Many manufacturers program the F2 or DEL key to redirect the boot process into the BIOS.

You may also tap the PAUSE/BREAK key to pause the boot process and give you a chance to read the scrolling text. Pressing PAUSE/BREAK again will resume the boot.

Once in, you'd look for FAILSAFE or FACTORY DEFAULTS or something to that effect and select it.

Let me know how it continues,
    Bob

I think you might have to edit config.sys, Im not quit sure about the exact lines so Il let some1 else advise you, good luck on solving the problem.

Hi Bob, thanks for your help. This is what I see when I hit F2 on start up. I get a screen that looks like a 1980's Atari Mario Brothers game that says AMBIOS and the choices I have are as follows:

    Under Setup:
    Standard
    Advanced
    Chipset
    Power Mgmt
    PCI/PnP
    Peripheral

    Under Utility I have:
    Detect IDE

    Under Default I have:
    Original (which I selected)
    Optimal
    Best

When I select Advanced under Setup, this is what I see:

    1st Boot Device: CDROM
    2nd Boot Device: IDE-0
    3rd Boot Device: Disabled
    4th Boot Device: Disabled
    Boot from Netword Card
Smart for Hard Disk: Disabled (even when enabled it doesn't seem to make a difference)
    Boot up Num-Lock: Disabled
    Floppy Drive Swap: Disabled

When I select Boot device Option, here are my choices:
    IDE-0
    IDE-1
    IDE-2
    IDE-3
    Floppy
    Floptical
    CDROM
    SCSI

Now, Under Pri Master this is what I see:

    User 16351
    HD 16
    WP 0
    Sec 63
    Size 8048
    PID 4
    Block On
    VBA On
The next lines are as follows:
    Pri Slave not detected
    Sec Master not detected
    Sec Slave not detected

Last night I must have messed something up. I think I restored defaults to some files and it got rid of the F1 Atapi incompatible and SMART capable but disabled message but now when I try to shutdown the computer, no matter that I selected shutdown, it restarts itself so I am having to just switch it off to shut it down. What have I done?????? Also, there is nothing that says Failsafe but I think it's equivalent to Default original, optimal and best. What should I select. At present, I've selected Original defaults and I also tried the paperclip thing again to get the CDROM to spit the disk out but she ain't having it! Unfortunately, I don't have my system original boot disk because a friend put this system in for me and even if I did, I wouldn't be able to get it into the CDROM.
Should I change the 1st Boot Device from CDROM to something else?
Again, I thank everyone for your help. Tina

Should I download windows2000 sp4? I already have it installed but would it help if downloaded it and reinstalled it?

It appears that your problems with the cdrom drive and your d: drive are not Windows related. They are not being detected in your BIOS. It is saying that it doesn't detect the primary slave nor the secondary master and slave. In the BIOS have it detect your ide devices. See if it finds your cdrom drive and d: drive. I would think that the problem could be the ide cable came loose. However, the hard drives are usually on the primary and the cdrom drives on the secondary. Did you say a friend put the system together for you? If so, ask him how he connected them. If you feel comfortable doing it you could open the computer yourself and check the cables. Also, when you boot up the computer does the cdrom light blink?
