Don't know how to find motherboard, but my laptop is an Acer AS 1410-8414 Notebook 11.6".

Installed Windows 7 Home Premium 32 Bit on it and went to get the Atheros LAN Driver from Acer's support website, but it says:

"Installer can't find AR81 Ethernet controller on your system."

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I already installed the chipset to no avail.

    Thanks.

    Hi

Strange that ACER doesnt supply the LAN driver as they normally do for any model that needs it, have you by any chance rebooted yet and gone to windows update to check for updates?

Try the below the Trial version of Everest should list the motherboard details etc

Ah sorry, didn't make it clear.

I was able to download the driver off their website, but that is the text that pops up when I try to install it.

Uploaded file. Thanks for the fast response. I'll be gone for 4 hours.

    Hi

Just so I know in Device Manager if their are any yellow ! marks next to any devices what are they?

EDIT: just noticed something that maybe it, did you change the OS version on ACERs support site to Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit as it lists a different LAN driver than the Atheros which is listed for Windows Vista (that is listed at default when you first go to the download page)

Try this one HERE (its called ACER Lan driver)

EDIT: Just downloaded it and inside its an Atheros one!
My next thought is if you have changed the OS for the various download per OS on ACERs page then enter your BIOS and make sure the ethernet/lan is enabled, as the log is not listing LAN, it is listing your Intel WiFi.

Entered the BIOS and LAN is enabled.

    Thanks for your help, Halo.

No, there are no yellow exclamation marks.

    Hi

    Still no LAN connection?

Weird if not, could you open Network and Sharing Centre and click in the left hand menu bar, Change Adapter Settings and is your Local Area Connection listed? if so does it have a red X next too it?

If so plug in the LAN cable and does it change?

If it does not change Right Click it and choose Diagnose, and what does that say when it finishes?

No, the LAN doesn't even show up there.

Perhaps I'm missing something in the BIOS...

    Hi

yeah, have a good root around the BIOS as I just re-read the tech specs on your laptop and LAN is definatly listed. Actually downloaded 2 manuals on your model and nothing stands out, sadly none of them list the BIOS menus.

So try the BIOS and go through each menu again, look for LAN or Ethernet, if all else fails give ACER a call.

Already tried calling Acer, they wanted to charge me $100 for tech support. :(

    Hi

    Ouch!!

All I can suggest is to double check the BIOS and if their is an option, there should be as I've not known a laptop/notebook/netbook without that option, is to make sure its enabled, then save and exit the BIOS.

Then see if it crops up.

Also wouldnt hurt to re-install the Chipset again and then reboot and try Windows Update first, then try installing the ACer LAN driver.

Do check this for me also, open Device Manager and click at the top View > Show Hidden Devices and anything in the list thats LAN or Ethrenet with a yellow ! or red x ?

Finally found a guide, and the BIOS menus, only thing I see is a reference to Network Boot in the Main menu, see if that is enabled? if not enable it and save and exit (while you may not network boot the laptop never know it mat need to be enabled to register the LAN port)

If you dont have this guide its HERE (for models 1810T/1410)

    Network boot is enabled.

There are no red Xs or yellow !s.

Tried reinstalling chipset to no avail. The Ethernet controller still won't pop up in device manager.

Thanks for all your help, I am desperate to get this solved.

Update: It let me install the LAN driver, but it still won't show up in device manager or when I click change adapter settings in the Network and Sharing Center.

    Hi

This is the weirdest ever issue I have come across, one thing to try and really doubt it could be this but worth checking anyway,

Click Start and type in the Start Search box gpedit.msc and hit enter, this will open Group Policy.

then navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Network > Network Connections > Ability to Enable/Disable a LAN connection and if enabled/or disabled set it to not configured (actually nothing in that network list should be anything but not configured)

Typing in gpedit.msc doesn't do anything. I googled it and found out it's not available on Windows 7 Home Edition. :S

Thats a pity, but rules out that as a cause. Will try and think of something else later on.

I'm beginning to think my LAN is broken. Is that possible?

Y'know what's interesting is that a week ago, the device manager had recognized it after I installed the chipset. And it even showed up under the network and sharing center.

But then a day after that, it just vanished completely. So I reinstalled Windows, and I'm back to square one, with it not being recognized.

    Hi

Yes very possible its broken, especially as it doesnt show up at all in Dev Mgr or Computer.

If you have any security software installed, Antivirus, firewall etc uninstall them, uninstall from Dev Mgr or Add/Remove any LAN driver thats installed, then try re-installing the chipset driver again and reboot.

Longshot is and if your upto it is to re-install Windows again, but this time just install the Chipset driver to start with and see if the LAN is picked up, if so then start installing the VGA, Audio and WiFi.

I ve been following this thread since it began and would suggest you double check dev manger if lan is either installed or carry the yellow sign, If not lan is gone , if your machine is still on warranty reach acer, if not change board. ALL THE BEST.

Yeah, I just had my netbook commissioned for repair. It is under warranty so that's a plus.

Thanks for all the replies. (with the exception of maddyby123)

    Hi

Seems the last and best option to send it in for repair, and do let us know if they find a hardware fault at all?

I will let you know. I sent it in for repair and got a new netbook today.

The network card works fine, thank God, but when I go to connect, it says,

"Local Area Connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration."

If you can help me with this, I will be eternally grateful.

Here is some information about my netbook. I am trying to share my netbook's internet connection for my desktop. I have a Linksys broadband 54mbps router WRt54G 2.4ghz router.

Also, internet sharing through the network card works when I use my mom's laptop which is running Ubuntu. Go Ubuntu! lol.

Might try installing Ubuntu on this netbook.

    Hi

I take it this is a Windows 7 based netbook?

Do you have Apples Bonjour installed on your PC? have a look in the Services list and if its there, double click it to open properties and Stop and Disable it and then reboot and try to connect again,

What is the security software on the PC, disable them to test.

Boot into Safe Mode with Networking to also test if you can connect.

Yes, Windows 7 based netbook. 32 Bit Home Premium.

I did as you suggested, disabled Microsoft Security Essentials on both computers to no avail. I don't have iTunes installed on my netbook yet, so no Bonjour there. I disable the Bonjour service on my desktop, though.

    Didn't work.

Now I'm in Safe mode with networking and it still gives me the Local Area Connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration. :(

    Hi

Might be a question to pose in the networking forum as many users stick to their specific specialisms and dont see questions in the other forum areas, my strong point is not networking and definatly not ICS.
