    Hi,

My Firefox has been redirecting me to this aartemis ( aartemis.com/newtab/?type=nt&ts=1384815866&from=cor&uid=ST3750840AS_5QD4HZT6XXXX5QD4HZT6 ) page constantly for the last few days. I read up about it and as you all probably know here, it appears to be pretty serious... So I've followed all the steps in the sticky threads, ran all scans and kept all logs. I hope you can help me to get rid of this dreadful thing....

I know all forums have their own rules and traditions, and I apologize if I break any. Just feeling quite depressed about this and really tired after battling it for a good few hours, but I read plenty here about what to do to request help, so I hope it'll be ok.

I think I got this by downloading something recently. It's very possible it was Slender's Woods ;) Yes, I know.

Uploaded 5 attachments, a few more in the next post (sorry for double-posting, just necessary in this case)

I will attach them as soon as I can (at work right now). I had done them, and the logs are on my PC at home. Couldn't double-post earlier since I was still waiting for my first post to be verified and approved but...

    ...I'm really glad you're responded;)

    I hope you can help.

I have now attached the missing logs.

The problem is that after Hitman's scan the program did ask me to subscribe for a trial version and once I did that it moved on with the recommended quarantine actions and I couldn't stop it... And it looked like Hitman found a LOT of things wrong with my PC, 88 items, including files with "artemis" in the name. I know the guide clearly said to mark all files and ignore them. It was an unfortunate accident which I hope won't affect the fix... much. I've attached 2 logs from Hitman, one just after scan and one when it was ready to close.

If there is something wrong with MGlogs I can redo it. I'm just not sure if it worked correctly- it kept that cmd window open for ages (a few hours) and didn't really do much, just kept analyzing. I didn't have any problems with installing any of the software, though, adn all other programs worked correctly.

Also, just in case, I'm using Vista 32 bit.

Artemis doesn't seem to affect anything other than Mozilla Firefox and IE (which I never use anyway). To start with, it would open artemis as homepage every time I opened Firefox, even though I've always had google.co.uk set as homepage. I right-clicked on Firefox's icon, then chose properties and in target there was a link to artemis added at the end of "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe". I deleted that and now Firefox opens to Google as normal, but when I open a new blank tab it is sadly still artemis page... And I've changed homepage to google in Firefox tools tab as well, but that doesn't seem to have any effect.

Thanks, please tell me what I can do to get rid of this thing....

We are going to be uninstalling your old version of FireFox and installing the new version. Except we will be using Revo Uninstaller. So do the below to save bookmarks:

    • Run FireFox and click Bookmarks.
    • Then select Organize Bootmarks.
    • Then on the next window click File and then select Export. Save the bookmarks.html file to your Desktop for later use in importing.
Now download and save the installer for the current version of FireFox but DO NOT install it yet.
You will need to exit FireFox now and use Internet Explorer to continue with the below until we reinstall FireFox.

Start by uninstalling FireFox, run CCleaner and then reboot. Do not skip the reboot.

After reboot, delete the below folders:

    • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    • C:\users\UserAccount\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox

where UserAccount is the actual user account name being used.

Now reinstall FireFox from the file previously downloaded.
Import your bookmarks file. (similar process to exporting).

    Any better?

    Good to know.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    7. If you are running Win 8, Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below to flush restore points:
      • Refer to the instructions for your WIndows version in this link: Disable And Enable System Restore
      • What we want you to do is to first disable System Restore to flush restore points some of which could be infected.
      • Then we want you to Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
