Hey everyone. I joined MajorGeeks to spread the word of a new tool I created that I think will greatly help in the removal of malware called AVERT.

You can view my website to check it out: <snip>

I used to work for Best Buy's Geek Squad and they had an internal tool called L.A.S.E.R. I can't remember what the acronym means, but it was this amazing tool.

It's sole purpose was to run hardware and anti-malware scans and if the customer paid for it, the tool would remove all infections found. The greatest thing about it, was that it utilized a bunch of different command line scanners to remove viruses automatically.

The key word here, is automatically. I'm sure most of us has had family members and friends bring us their computers when they had a virus and to remove viruses, we have to run several different scanners just to make sure it's clean.

    Which means this:

    1. Install scanner one and pray it installs.
    2. Update scanner and pray it updates
    3. Run scanner
    4. Walk away
    5. Come back, realize it isn't done and come back later
    6. Repeat step five
    7. Success!
    8. Repeats steps 1 through 6 for each scanner.

    Pretty annoying, huh?

This is almost always the exact process we use anytime a computer is already infected. Antivirus apps are awesome and most of them do a great job, but once a machine is infected, it's highly unlikely one app will completely clean it.

So, don't you think it would be nice to have a tool like Geek Squad's L.A.S.E.R. and not pay 200 USD for each scan?

    Yeah. Me too.

This is why I made AVERT.

AVERT utilizes 7 command line scanners to fully clean an infected machine. You can choose to run 1 or all 7 scanners and then each scanner has additional options:

AVERT also utilizes CCleaner to clean temp file locations.

Each app used in AVERT is free and does not have to be installed. These are the steps you can take now:

    1. Run AVERT
    2. Select 'Complete Scans' & hit run
    3. Success!

    More or less anyway

This is AVERT's Order of Operation:

    1. Create temporary directories
    2. Unzip CCleaner (If applicable)
    3. Run CCleaner (If applicable)
    4. Unzip scanners
    5. Update signatures for selected scanners
    6. Run scans
    7. Log results

The logs are kept on the machine and you can use AVERT later to view the logs to see how many infections were found for each scanner and how many infections each scanner removed. The totals for all are also shown.

All of the scanners in AVERT are free, but there are two exceptions. 1. Panda does not provide free signatures. AVERT does include some signatures, but for the latest signatures, you'll need to purchase a license, any license, from Panda and save your credentials in the settings window. 2. AviraAntivir command line scanner is also free, but you need to purchase a license in order to use it. In Avira's directory, you'll find a license file (HBEDV.KEY). You'll need to put this file in the AviraAntivir command line zip file (\AVERT\Scanners\AviraAntivir\scancl.zip).

I think that's it! Using AVERT is super easy, but if you have any questions or problems, please let me know.

    Thanks!

Download at <snip> and be sure to read the FAQ section.

Um... I don't. I just made a tool, in my free time, that I thought would help people =/

I still will recommend that you contact either of them to see if they would like to host your tool on our web site. ;)

I haven't had the chance to test it out yet, but that would be the best way to go to get it out to the public.

EDIT: I have sent this to our Admin team to look at.

We get a lot of submissions and often I simply delete the ones that are obvious but since you took the time to personally submit your program, I will take the time to personally respond so don’t take it personally :) I will also respond on the forum so people know you were not ignored.

It would be best if the program could scan, detect and offer to run or get and install missing programs you might need. Also to leave out Malwarebytes or SuperAntispyware is a mistake of epic proportions. You went with a few antivirus programs, many will miss what SuperAntiSpyware or Malwarebytes can detect and remove. You might consider other tools like Iobit or Spybot. I think your idea is done much better with Hitman Pro. Basically your program is simply going to scan based on CCleaner and whatever anti-virus program you MIGHT have installed. You didn't even include Avast or AVG, 2 of the most popular antivirus software programs available.

I have to decline this, but trust me when I tell you I am doing you a favor. What you basically have here is a really good attempt and a good free idea. I don’t know if you have some bias to your favorite removal programs or are simply unaware of the best cleaning programs out there but at this time I see your program as being in alpha form and not ready for primetime or Majorgeeks. Because of this, your program will most likely be rated poorly and once you have hundreds of poor ratings, it is impossible to ever get it back up to a really good rating.

On a personal thought I would find a better program name, it can make all the difference. Avert could remind people of Mcafee Avert Stinger or the charity Avert.org which is an aids charity. I get why you used the name Avert, just not feeling it. Maybe you could use 2 words and keep Avert, I don't know. I don't want to give specific names and I think I might be wrong here Using Avert might go to your advantage because of the Mcafee tie-in. I am unsure if Avert is Mcafee copyrighted as their program is called McAfee AVERT Stinger using all caps as you did. If they own it, you won't last long using it before you get a cease and desist.

You have my email, contact me later if you update it more.

    Thanks for the reply, Tim.

I really appreciate you looking over my program. I guess I need to do a better job at explaining how it works and what it does. AVERT does not scan with what the user has installed. When you first run AVERT, you can choose to download up to 8 CLI scanners. These are all portable programs that are zipped up and are downloaded into a subdirectory of where AVERT is located. When running scans, if you choose all 8 scanners and have all 8 scanners downloaded, AVERT will scan with every scanner, giving the user the best possibility of removing the infection. Also, each scanner has up to 3 different scanning options; Thorough, Blended, Minimal.

I assure you, if I could use MBAM, Spyware Bot, SUPERAntiSpyware, etc, I would. In order for me to use a scanner, it has to be portable and have a command line interface. AVERT doesn't utilize any programs that are installed.

Besides scanning, AVERT also backs up the registry, deletes temps files, performs other fixes that malware might mess up and many more are on the way. So AVERT does much more than just utilize CCleaner and scan with what the user MIGHT have installed ;)

As for the name, I'm considering it. A couple of other people have mentioned it's similarity to McAfee's Stinger as well.

    Thanks,

    Ernest

Right on, I think I overlooked that aspect of the portable apps, which is smart but was not clear to me... I wonder if it is worth it to add in these as optional scans, if installed? I don't know? I like your explanation and would be glad to add it if you like.

Thanks for adding AVERT to MajorGeeks, Tim.

I'll definitely add in the ability to run scans for applications that are installed and have a CLI.

    I'll get some added asap.

    Thanks again,

    Ernest

I've updated AVERT to 2.1. I've fixed a bunch of small bugs and added a couple of things. The biggest change, is the addition of installed scanners. AVERT now supports select scanners that the user has installed.

This means that if any of the scanners on the list are already installed on the PC AVERT is being used on, the user can then use that scanner with the others.

For now, the only supported scanner is AVG. As you all can imagine, adding additional scanners is time consuming. It usually takes several hours to code it in, test it on various systems and then fix any bugs that occur. So, I'll be adding support for more as I get time.

If there's any requests for specific scanners, please let me know.

Installed scanners works just the same as portable one. Just select, "Custom Scans" from the AVERT Scans configurations drop down box. In this window, you'll see two tabs. One for portable scanners and the other for installed scanners. If any of those scanners are installed, it's back color will be white. Just select it, hit okay, and click Run Scans.

    Thanks
