I installed Avast free AV should I have my Windows XP firewall and AV running as well?

You should only have 1 (one) AV and 1 (one) firewall running at the same time.

I don't know Avast (free), but according to http://majorgeeks.com/Avast_Home_Edition_d1968.html it does not contain a firewall.

So leave your Windows firewall running, but remove any other AV software.

no I don't think so, XP has a virus protection tab under Security Control in the Control Panel.

The Security Center "Virus Protection" is just for Monitoring whether or not you have
an antivirus program running that Windows recognizes.

Look at the attached image and compare that with you see on your machine.
