    I downloaded avast free version from here and I think the 90 days is over.. 90 or 120 or whatever the free trial version is.. because i don see the icon on the task bar(is that what its called? at the right hand bottom.... where time is displayed on the desktop) avast online scanner used to do its job even when i was not running the software. but now i don see the icon there anymore. also, the last time i scanned it was unable to heal or delete certain infected files and gave an error message. so I'm wondering how to give avast a new lease of life. or should i download some other free anti virus program.... please advise

    Avast free version only requires a registration to activate ....however, malware could always compromise your system, so I would suggest that you please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    As said...it is possible that malware is stopping the anti-virus programs from running ...I suggest you follow the instructions given and then when we can see what is going on in your computer, we may be able to clean you so that you can install / reinstall avast.

    Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

    * Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    * Under Main choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser

    * Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
    o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser

    * Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.

    uninstalling has not been the problem.. i did uninstall avast many days ago. i shouldnt have uninstalled. i did it because somehow the resident protection stopped working. i did not see the icon on taskbar. the problem is how to get the free version of avast with resident protection again. or can you suggest any other free anti virus wit resident protection... and what must i do when the trial is completed... and why is my internet connection so slow since a few days....what can be done from my side. cos the service provider says the problem lies wit my computer and they don see anything wrong from their side.

    You have tried downloading Avast ?
    Once you do the free registration, it is good for a year ....and then you only need re-register...perhaps you need to post in the software section.
